Good Morning,

I am researching family history for a friend, His great grandmother was Elizabeth Griffiths ( Lizzie) she died in a place called Law, Carluke, Scotland in 1919, aged 49yrs. She married James MacAulay in Manchester in August 1892. They had a son,  he was named James Richard Galway MacAulay

On her death certificate her parents were both deceased Peter Griffiths (farm labourer) and Rebecca Griffiths.

I am hoping that my friends Grandfather with the middle name "Galway" great grandmother or GG Grandfather came from Galway.

Kind Regards,

George Curran

  • George,

The family looks to have been living in Co. Cavan. Here’s Peter’s death in Tullyroane, Cavan in 1898. The informant was son in law James MacAulay of Killoughter.

I think that after Peter’s death Rebecca moved to Scotland to be with her daughter and son in law. She died in Law on 11.11.1901 aged 66. Lizzie was the informant. Rebecca’s parents names are not on her death certificate (the section has a blank line drawn through it), indicating Lizzie didn’t know who they were. So possibly Rebecca was an orphan or adopted. Her origins may be hard to trace.

Macaulay family are in the 1901 Scottish census Carluke district, 629/4/43. Parents plus 3 children (William, Richard & James). Rebecca doesn’t appear to have been there though.

  • Good Morning,

I am looking for your help once again.

Elizabeth Griffiths ( Lizzie) she died in Law, Carluke, Scotland in 1919, aged 49yrs. Can you tell me where and when she was born ? If it was Ireland how I would go about getting her birth certificate.

    Kind Regards,

    George Curran

  • George,

Adding to Patricia's reply, if Elizabeth was born before 1864, you won't get a birth certificate as they hadn't been introduced in Ireland. The church baptism will be the only record.

  • Elwyn,

The information I had was that Lizzie died in 1919 aged 49yrs old, this doesnt tie up with the information provided. Do you know where she was born ?

    Many thanks for your help

  • George,

The information on death (and other) certificates is only as accurate as the informant’s knowledge. No documentation is required when registering events (and in many cases couldn’t be produced even if it was).  When officialdom asked for an age or a date of birth it was common just to guess.  I suspect therefore that the age on Lizzie's death certificate is wrong.  She was evidently living in Britain by 1892. Have a look at the ages she gave in the 1901 & 1911 censuses (and the 1891 if she was there then).  See how they tie in.

I searched the statutory birth records for the area around Annagh 1864 – 1874 (Cavan regn area) but did not find any birth that fits. I think Patricia has found the right birth ie Bessie in 1862. In which case there’s no birth certificate to obtain. If you want some documentation, you could ask the church for a copy of the baptism, or you could get a copy from PRONI from their set of records. (Not sure which would be cheaper). Family look to have been Church of Ireland. All the Griffith(s) in Co Cavan in 1901 were COI.
