I am looking for any information on my great great grandfather Philip Meighan. I have his naturalization papers to become a US citizen. It gives his birthday May 1823 in Parish of Dromin, County of Louth. He arrived in Boston April 1845. His parents are listed as Patrick Meighan and Kate Mathews on his death certificate. I have very little information on Patrick and Kate (Catherine).

Would appreciate any information as I would love to visit the parish and area where the family is from on my next trip over. Thank you much.

  • Hello Steph,

There were a number of children born to Patrick and Kate, according to RootsIreland. Here’s just one of them. Note the name in the various baptismal records is Meighan, Mihan, Meehan, etc. I did not see a baptism for Philip. All were in the Catholic parish of Dunleer. Dromin is the name of a civil parish, not a Catholic parish.

  • Thank you so much for such a fast answer! Is there a church and graveyards in the parish of Dunleer to see now?

Hello Ladies, I live near to Dromin and have a copy of the old graveyard inscriptions, I attach the entries for 3 gravestones that may be relevant to your query.

    Good Luck

  • Hi Steph, if you have any queries on your proposed trip let me know, here is a site for Louth http://www.jbhall.clahs.ie/

If you are in the USA then this is the county of the Presidents maternal ancestors, about 20 miles from Dromin, his tree can be Googled online for free.

There is a Dunleer History Facebook page with old photos, may be called mid Louth history now, apply to join, they are not a genealogy group. There is a Louth page and on You Tube there is a short vidoe of still photos Ghosts of Drogheda which would be the nearest big town and was probably port of departure especially if they emigrated via Liverpool.
