Hello, I'm a descendant of Henry Prendergast 1813-1867 and Mary Cosstello 1815-1902 from Tuam, who emigrated to Australia with their seven children, all born in Tuam, on the "Pestonjee Bomanjee" in 1854. They have a huge number of descendants in Australia.  Some have found each other through recent DNA testing.

I do not know the Parish where the children were born.

Henry was the son of an earlier Henry Prendergast born about 1775 presumably in Galway, who married Maria Cuffe born about 1776. The marriage cannot be found so far. They were said to have had four children - Henry, Honarion (Honoria), Mary and Patrick. It is believed one or more of these emigrated to the USA.

It would be wonderful if some confirmation could be found for the family of Henry b 1813 and/or his wife.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and located the marriage record in 1832 in Tuam. See below. I also located baptismal records for five children in Tuam. Thomas 1834 John 1835 Patrick 1837 Sabina 1842 Margaret 1844 Here is a link to the Tuam parish register  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1082 Do you have the names for the other two children?

Let me know what questions you have.

  • Thank you, Roger. I had the wrong marriage date (as given by someone in a tree on Ancestry) so am pleased to have the correct one. I think the witness John Costello was probably Mary's father or just possibly brother - I have no information about her family.

There were three other  children - Mary Ann 1840, Sabina Josephine 1842, and Henry 1855 - the latter born in Australia.  I am a direct descendant of Margaret.  I did search the Catholic PRs 1813-1815 some time ago and found a number of Costellos but no Prendergasts.  Obviously I need to do further searching at earlier and later dates.

My  main questions are - confirmation of Mary as the daughter of John Costello and Mary O'Brien, plus any siblings.

Also any siblings for Henry Prendergast b 1813 - possibly Honarion (Honoria), Mary and Patrick.

I have information about another Mary Costello(e) which I will put in a separate post.

I'm not finding any naptismal records for Henry Prendergast or Mary Costello. My guess is that they were baptized in a different parish than Tuam and that parish no longer has records back prior to 1820. I did find a baptismal record for a Henry Prendergast in 1843 in Tuam. Likely the father Patrick was a brother to Henry (1813).
