How can I find out more about a Parish Priest of St. Michael's Church in Tipperary Town from 1903-1922. Canon Arthur Ryan, a staunch Nationalist, (like many encouraged by John Redmond,) my great grandparents traveled many miles to have him marry them in Tipperary, and I am trying to piece together that history. I respectfully ask, could anyone direct to as to where I can find more information regarding him? Then traveled from Pontypridd, Glamorgan, Wales, where my grandfather was supposedly working to this church, and Michael Daly was originally born at Scalp, Knocknadarriv, Co. Kerry, Eire, (Brosna) but then they returned to Wales. Seems a long way to travel to get married, unless it's because they have family in the area which I have never found any evidence of that. Of course maybe we were related to him.
Thanks in advance,

Mercy, If you supply your grandparents' names and dates, it might give the rest of us a few ideas about how to look for their connection with Arthur Ryan.
A couple of other ideas...
Ryan was likely ordained in Maynooth, so the college archives there may have information on him. Also the church he served in and the diocese he served in might have details. And the local historical society in Tip may be able to assist you.
I hope this helps.

Hi Mercy and Patricia, if you google Canon Arthur Ryan Parish Priest St Michaels church Tipperary Town 1900 it mentions marriage of Philomens Ryan niece to Canon Arthur. who married a Major who was killed in WW1, Theres a stained glass window in the Church to commemorate this couple.
It is possible Canon Arthur was ordined in Maynooth, but more likely he was ordained in St Patricks College Thurles. when the archives opens there the archivest there may be able to tell you his parents names. There are at least four priests buried inside the church, and about ten more buried in the grounds sorrounding the Church.
You may be able to get date of death, and obituary from local newspaper with list of relatives.
Best of luck, let me know if you have any questions.

Canon Arthur Ryan 1852-1922 was born is Scarteen House, Scarteen, Knocklong, Co. Limerick his parents were John Ryan 1800-1863 + Alice Hartigan 1810-1891. He was one of 14 children one of whom was an Army General, two priests, one doctor, one Nun, one the first Sub-Sheriff of Co. Limerick in 1867 since 1690. two went to Australia, one was Master of the Scarteen Hounds later known as the ''Black & Tans'' . Canon Atrhur wrote a book the name of which eludes me. His brother Dr Charles wrote a book on his time as a doctor with the Red Cross in the Franco-Prussian War 1873-1880 ( ? ). Canon Arthur was educated at St. Partick's College Thurles and was an educator there until his appointment to St. Michael's Church, Tipperary.
