I am trying to trace my family history and I am back to my G.G. grandfather, Michael Quirk born 1809-1812 in Ireland, possibly Waterford County.  I believe Michael and 2 of his brothers, William and John came to Canada and possibly landed in Newfoundland and from there Michael and one of his brothers (unknown which brother) left, Michael settled in Nova Scotia and married an Ellen Byron (also from Ireland) and had a large family by today's standards, there were 11 children, 9 girls and 2 boys.

Michael is my brick wall I have not been able to find out very much on him other than what I have posted any assistance would be greatly appreciated....thanks Joe Quirk

  • Hello Joe,

Have you tried www.rootsireland.ie.  I did a quick search and narrowed it down to Co. Waterford and tipperary.  I found 4 Michael Quirks between both counties.  You would have to open these records and see who the parents are and then search for william and John with the same parents.  It would be a bit of detective work but Im sure its worth it.

  • I am curious about William Quirk  who came with Michael Quirk. Do you know what happened to him? I have a William Quirk born 1810 in Ireland who married Ellen Howard of Latteragh, Tipperary. Ellen's family was from Nenagh and Latteragh.  I do not know if they married before or after he came. I was told that he came through Canada, then moved on to Adlerbrook, Franklin County, NY. The story was told that he was  the first of his family to come over and that he was one of 7 brothers who migrated to the USA but that they settled from Canada down some even moving to Louisiana.  I know that he immigrated before 1848 but do not know when. He may be William.

I am the 4th generation born in the United States. I have done the ancestry.com DNA along with my sister and come up with positive connection results results for Quirk's coming from Nenagh, Roscrea, Isle of Man. They are all 5-8 th generation cousins and I don't know how we relate.

From Nengah, Tipperary: Thomas Quirk b. 1810 Nenagh, Tipperary, IR and marries a Mary Corbon. Children are Margaret,Mathew, Timothy and Edward all born in Ireland. His son Edward Quirk  born in Irealnd marries a Bridget Rafferty. Migrated around 1864 not sure where and moves to Hannibal, St. Louis, MO . Daughter Margaret Quirk married a Patrick Tierney.

From Unknown, Tipperary:James Quirk b. 1805 married Mary Toomey. Farmer, then logger who  immigrated before 1840 lived in Oneida, New York, first then to Ottowa, Ontario Canada until 1856 then to Dakota, Minnesota

From Roscrea, Nenagh, Silvermines, Tipperary: Edmund J Quirk b. 1844 brother of Bridget Quirk born 1840in Roscrea. Edward J married Ann Dohney and moves to St. Louis, MO. Bridget does not migrate and marries James Hickey and has children born in Silvermines, Newport County, and Nenagh.

Form  Mount Talbot, Roscommon: Cecelia M. Quirk b.1883 married John Coffey after migrating to NY. Arrival in 1901 and travelling with a Jane Quirk. She settled in Putnam, NY after marriage but said she was coming to visit a sister who lived in NY on her travel documents.

From Unknown, Ireland: Pierce Quirk b. 1808, Ieland who married Mary Cleary and settled in Dover, Wisconsin. (This person's family members look like my father and his ancestors that I know of).

From Unknown, Ireland; Patrick Quirk b. 1819 in Ireland and marreid Joanna Walsh.  Immigrated around 1838 and married in the US and moves to Wayne County, Detroit, Michigan.

    FROM ISLE OF MAN:

Susannah Quirk b. 1844 in Patrick Isle of Man. Married to Thomas Cannell. ( She looks like my Quirk family) She did not ever leave Isle of Man.

Thomas Quirk b. 1818 who married Eleanor Unknown. I dont know where he was born but his chilren were born in Isle of Man and include Catherine O Quirk b. 1863, Christian Ann Quirk b. 1857, Phillip Quirk 1860, Isabella 1863, Herbert Gill Quirk 1869, Fredrick Charles Quirk 1871, William Stanley Quirk 1874, Cora F. Davis 1882. Some of these children Migrated to Nordland, Atkin, Minnesota.

Any connections to any of these people?

  • Hi Kelly,

None of these names fit with what I have right now, as I said the only one I know for sure is my G.G. grandfather Michael, as far as his two brothers are concerned I have been told that one (unknown which one) stayed in Newfoundland while the other left with Michael and from there it's all a mystery.  I have heard that the one that left with Michael settled for a short time in Cape Breton and then eventually went to western Canada, but again this is only hearsay......I wish I could make a connection with Ireland so I can continue my quest, we were in Ireland in October 2013 and loved it there, the only real connection I have concerning my G.G. grandfather and Ireland is a delayed registration of birth from one of his daughters that state he was from Waterford, Ireland.  That is all I have at this point, I have a vast amount of information on Michael's Canadian family and a lot of them are residing in the U.S. mostly in the Mass. area.

    Hello,

I have traced my geneology back to "possibly" a William Quirk that came over and settled in the Ferryland district. This could have been my Great great Grandfather. Having some difficulty nailing it down as there are 2 William Quirks floating around then. I think one may have been a son of the William that came over or unrelated. My Grandfather also settled in  Nova Scotia after being born and growing up in Bay Bulls, NF. He also had a brother Henry that settled in New York I believe. Possibly to join other family?

Things get a little sketchy that far back. From what I've found, there was a "e" on William Quirke. He married Catherine Coady in Bay Bulls Nov 27, 1851. I believe this to be my Great Great GF as James Quirk my Great GF was born May 1, 1854 to him, and my GF Patrick Vincent Quirk was born to James.

I have some record that He may have had a father James from where I'm not sure and have not confirmed this.

A huge hurdle in all this is the habit of naming your children the same name as yourself or a parent. Really messes us up when trying to trace our roots. Hope this sheds some light and I'm hoping a conncection can be made to the home country as we've never been "totally" sure we were Irish of Manx. Here's hoping for some answers.

  • Follow up.

Have confirmed with a reasonable degree of certainty that William Quirke was born in 1820 Mobile Newfoundland.

Also it appears that his Father was Daniel Quirk(e) which was recorded as Dan'l Qurk in the record on the NF Geneolgy site. Have discovered evidence that it was recorded in error and it is Daniel Quirk(e).

Daniel Quirk(e) was born in Barristown (?) Tipperary 1795 and must have returned back leaving his descendant family in NF. Have evidence of his death in Cahernahalla, Capperwhite, Co. Tipperary.

I have had difficulty trackinng any evidence of Barristown down, it might be a misinterpretation of Barretstown but unconfirmed.
