  • Hi William,

More than likely John Fair came from the Hollymount area of County Mayo where a Campbell Fair and an Anne Jane Fair were noted in the early part of the 19th Century.

The Fairs were Protestants who it is said came from County Fermanagh to Mayo in the latter half of the 18th Century.   The Fairs owned land in the village of Ballyveela near the border of County Galway and some of my ancestors rented from them.  They were good landlords even in the worst of times in Ireland.

A Robert Fair owned land near the town of Headford across the border in County Galway where I spent my early years.  Robert's son Joseph, was a horse owner and rider and appears as a stand in for John Wayne in "The Quiet Man" movie of the 1950's riding his own horse along the beach.

To the best of my knowledge there are still Fairs in the Hollymount area of County Mayo.  I went through there several years ago and noted a store (bar/grocery?) with the name.

  • Hello William,

My name is Diana and I too have a ggreat grandfather named John Fair.  My Fair family came from the Foxford area in the west part of Ireland in County Mayo.  They were from Cregagh (Creaggagh) which is about 2 miles from Foxford.  I do not know much about them.  I believe that John Fair was married to Mary Ann Bingham.  He did have a spm named Thomas Fair.  There were several more sons of John Fair.  My John Fair was born in the late 1790's.  He and his family including siblings did immigrate to Canada in the 1830's.  They lived in Oshawa and Toronto.  There are several Fair family members who are buried in both Toronto at St. James Cemetary and Oshawa.  I have located a distant Fair cousin who is a descendant of Thomas Fair who has found the grave of John Fair in Oshawa, Canada.  One of John Fair's son's was David Fair who married Catherine Mitchell.  David and Catherine Fair are my great grandparents.  There was another son John Fair (David's brother) who married an Elizabeth Mitchell (Catherine Mitchell's sister).  So it was two brothers who married two sisters.  In the past when I have tried to find my ggreat grandfather's John Fair family in Foxford/Creagagh in County Mayo, Ireland there is mention of a family with the last name of "Joyner".  So there is a good possibility that we are related.  Please contact me with any information you might have.

    Diana
