My 2nd great-grandfather was Kerin Heaton, born in 1839 in the Ferbane parish. In 1842 he immigrated with parents John Heaton and Margaret Guinan to Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. I'd love to connect with anyone reseraching these surnames in the Ferbane area.

  • Dear Jen:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site.

I cannot find any baptism record for a Kerin Heaton with parents named John and Margaret Guinan.

If you would consider creating an Ancestor Profile for John/Margaret/Kerin Heaton, under the XO Chronicles, that might yield more information for you as others may be researching the same families and be able to add further information to your research.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

    All the best,

    Jane

  • Hi Jane,

Thank you for taking the time to help me. I actually found the baptism record on RootsIreland.ie! It was transcribed as Kiran Healan, baptized in the Ferbane parish in September 1839 - parents' names transcribed as John Healan and Margaret Guinan. Looking at the microfilm image, I can see that whoever recorded everything almost never crossed his Ts. But I will take your suggestion and create an ancestor profile when I have the chance because I hope to find out more. I have several DNA matches with Guinan ancestors and we're trying to put everything together.

  • Jen,

Hi. My people are Heatons from Offaly and am researching to see if they may have come from here. My people include Michael Heaton (b. 1823?) who married Ann Cahal (Cahill) possibly daugher of James Cahill. Mike came to the United States ( 1853) with his wife and son James and settled in Shenandoah, Schuylkill Co., Pa. and mined anthracite. I thought but am not sure if your John, father of Kieran, might be related to my Michael. Michael's sons were James, Michael and John. I have been looking unsuccessfully for Heatons in Ballieborough, Offaly.

  • Hi Paul,

Glad to hear from you! Yes, John Heaton was related to your ancestor Michael Heaton because several people in my family have matched to descendants of Michael Heaton and Ann Cahill on Ancestry DNA. Based on their ages, it's possible that John and Michael were brothers, but, of course, it's possible they were related some other way. On Kieran's baptism record one of the sponsors is Michael Heaton, the other is Rose Heaton. If you send me an email at jefoley8@gmail.com I can send you an invitation to view my tree and we can see if there's anything more we can figure out.

  •  That's so gracious of you, Jen. Do you think Michael's and John;s father could be James? Michael and Ann Cahill;s first son was James, which made me wonder.  I have a photo of Michael, the possible brother of John, I can send. I also have a pix of Michael Jr., my gm's father.

      Slan,
