There are numerous Richmonds in County Cavan, and many are named John Richmond.  I am trying to locate my 2X Great Grandfather and Grandmother.  I know that he was born in County Cavan, but I cannot find any record of a John Richmond being born in 1822.  His wife, Matilda Williamson, was born in County Monaghan, and again I find no record of her birth.

They were married in 1842 in Killeevan, County Monaghan.  They migrated to Scotland shortly thereafter.  They had a daughter named Mary Ann born in 1842 in Cardross, Dunbartonshire, Scotland; and a son, John, born in 1843 in Lanarkshire, Scotland.  Another daughter, Elizabeth, is born in 1850, and by this time the family has settled in Renfrewshire, Scotland.  In 1855, a daughter named Christina is born, and her birth certificate lists her as child number six, with two deceased daughters and 4 living children.  Christina lived only three years.  The remaining two girls and one boy grew to adulthood, married, and had families of their own.  My Great Grandfather was the son named John Richmond.

I am trying to learn when all of the Richmonds came to County Cavan.  I am also trying to determine the different family groupings - who were the patriarchs, and which children belonged to each one.  I am also hoping to find the birth records for both my 2X Gr Grandfather and my 2X Gr Grandmother.

I assume your ancestors were Church of Ireland? The subscription site Roots Ireland does have a March 5 1826 baptismal record for a John Richmond in Anna Church of Ireland parish. Location is shown as Cornadona parish of Drumlane. Parents were John Richmond and Sarah Richmond. Could this record be for your John Richmond? I know you show an 1842 marriage record.

  • Thank you, Roger. I have seen that record, and so far it is as close as I have come to the 1822 birth date that I have.  Yesterday I got a message about his wife, Matilda, that put her birthdate at 1818.  If yours is the correct John, then Matilda would have been 8 years older, which doesn/t seem likely.  I think I need to keep looking.

There is also an 1805 John Richmond baptized March 24 1805 in Anna C of I father Abraham Richmond mother Elizabeth Richmond. No townland.

The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Cavan has 14 records all in Annagh or Drumlane civil parishes. Seven of the 14 records are for Francis Richmond and I'm wondering ig all seven records pertain to the same person. There are five Richmond records in Cornadarragh townland: Geoffrey, John, Robert, Sarah and William.

    Have you considered DNA testing?

  • Hi Roger, sorry for my delay in answering.  I  found the same information that you have. I  was hoping there might be a Cavan relative that couldclear things up for me.

I did do a DNA test through Family Tree and have uploaded it to Geni. So far no luck. All of my relatives seem to be very distant relatives. I  may try another.

I am currently on my way to the Allen County Library in Indiana, USA. It is the 2nd largest genealogy library in the US, and I hope to find some leads there.

4hank you for your hard work.

  • To all from either Brankill or Cornadarragh townlands, I am coming to County Cavan in October (2nd - 6th) to explore your areas and to see if I can learn anymore about my Richmond family.  I recently found a document that names my 3x Gr-Grandparents as Geoffrey Richmond and Mary Graham.  I would like to confirm this with birth certificates and a marriage license.  I am also still looking for information on their son John and his wife Matilda Williamson (of Kileevan, Clones, Monaghan.)  If anyone would be available as a guide for hire please contact me.  I have a list of places that I would like to visit.  (I am 75 years of age and will not be able to drive myself, so most of my journey will be on the bus and by foot.)  Best regards to all you searchers.
