Hello,

I am researching my paternal great-grandparents and seem to have reached a dead end. I’m wondering if you might be able to assist as my paternal great-grandfather’s family appears to have been from Kiltoghert Parish.

My paternal great-grandfather was James Riley (also spelled Reilly, Reilley, and Reily in different documents). According to his marriage and death certificate, his parents were John Reilley/Riley and Mary Gralton. According to birth and baptismal transcripts, he was born on February 1, 1874, and baptized on February 12, 1874  (though his immigration documentation indicates he was born on February 22, 1878; his marriage certificate indicates he was 30 years old in 1910, meaning he would have been born in 1880).

A marriage transcript indicates a John Reily married a Mary Gralton on July 21, 1856 in Kiltoghert Parish.

In searching children of John and Mary (Gralton) Reilly, I located Philip, Mary, John, Michael, Patrick, Elizabeth, Louis, Ellen, James and Anne. According to Passenger List that corresponds with the port of departure and date of entry listed on my great-grandfather’s immigration documentation, he would have arrived with a Louis Riley and intended to reside with a brother, Patrick. Both of these names correspond with children associated with John and Mary (Gralton) Reilly.

Apart from family record indicating my great-grandfather, James Riley, immigrated to the U.S. from Co. Leitrim and his marriage and death certificates, which correspond with the information I’ve uncovered, I don’t have any additional information. I have a photo from my late-great-uncle depicting Carrick-on-Shannon, so I’m confident I’m looking in the right area.

I am looking for assistance in obtaining more information about my second-great-grandparents.

Any information, leads, or thoughts would be helpful.

Thanks for your help and assistance.

  • Hello again Sean!

Here is the civil birth record for James seventh record on the page https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1874/03159/2158669.pdf

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and located two possible baptismal records for Mary Gralton in Kiltoghert parish. The 1836 is more likely for an 1856 marriage. The earliest John Reilly baptismal record in Kiltoghert was 1840 which I thought was too late.

Did John and Mary emigrate? I did not see them in the 1901 census but also did not see a likely death record.
