Hi Simon,
You did not specify what religion your family were. There were "Robert's" Church of Ireland and Roman Catholic in County Laoise in that time. I came across the following on - www.rootsireland.ie - subscription site:
William Roberts, Parkneven, Parish of Durrow - Birth 1811 - Religion not stated - Father - John - Mother - Muldowny, Marriage: William Roberts to Betty Whelan - October 1st 1829 - Portlaoise R.C., Birth: April1834 - William - Father William - Mother: Betty Whelan, Birth: August 1837 - John Roberts - Father: William - Mother: Betty Whelan.Nothing found for Michael or Edward.
A Joseph Roberts was baptised in Abbeyleix on March 1st 1866. Father: Joseph Roberts, Shoemaker - Mother: Maria McEvoy. No address - Civil record: March 23rd 1866.
The above may not have any connection to your family!

Thank you! that is very interesting.
They were Church of Ireland- sorry should have mentioned that, but I only recently found out.
I know that John and Edward Roberts were relatives. Their father was Michael Roberts who was described as a farmer or gardener.
I wonder if William Roberts might have been a brother of Michael?
There seem to have been quite a few people with surname Roberts in the Abbeyleix/Portlaois area at that time.
I really appreciate you taking the time to look for me!
Cheers,
Simon,

Hello, I found a Julia Roberts in Abbeyleix in about 1860. Could she be the widow of Michael Roberts, a gardener? They were Church of Ireland.
