Roger Doud (born in Ireland, 25 Nov 1811), emigrated to the United States ion 25 March 1841. He emigrated by way of Liverpool on the ship Waverley, His older brother Peter Doud (born in Ireland in 1812) emigrated to the United States via Liverpool in 1837. Both brothers settled in Illinois, where each married, had children, and worked as farmers. Peter probably died before 1870; Roger and his family moved to Poweshiek County, Iowa by 1870. Roger died there in 1886.

Every US and Illinois census record that Roger Doud and his brother Peter appear in show that they come from Ireland, but they provide no further information. Their records in the New York passenger lists also provide the same information. I have been unable to find the marriage record for either of them, or any other document that shows where in Ireland they originated from.

I would be very grateful to anyone who can help enlighten me. Thank you!

  • Hi Tracy,

First of all I think the name might have been Dowd originally

I was not able to find a baptism for this Roger but found two other Roger Dowds that could be related and a link to the place of origin. Names often run trough a family

Roger Dowd baptised 1754 in County Antrim (now Northern Ireland)

Roger Dowd baptised 1870  in County Antrim

There are also 3 Peter Dowd's born in Antrim two in 1869 and one in 1879

This might be a lead to Antrim

  • Hi Annemarie,

Thank you so much for your quick reply! I will follow up on the leads you suggest and see what I can find out.

After coming to America, Roger and Peter both named their eldest sons Daniel, which makes me wonder if their father's name was Daniel Doud/Dowd. Roger's second son and Peter's third son were both named Peter, which suggests another family name (grandfather, perhaps?)

Thanks again for your help. This has been such a stubborn brick wall for me, and I am glad to have a new lead to follow!

    Warm regards,

    Tracy

  • Randy, do you have a source for that date? I see that Roger Doud's brother Peter was alive at the time of the 1860 census, and he did not appear with his family in the 1870 census. I have not been able to find any documentation of his death. Do you have a record that you could share?

  • Randy, I don't know if I saw your note from way back in 2013 about your 3X GGF Rodger Doud from Galway. Did he emigrate to the United States in 1841?

  • They have the date wrong on my reply.  I just posted that.  I found the information in the Illinois, Mercer County, Naturalization records.  I have posted this on the tree FamilySearch.org.  There is the direct link:  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C9TY-63NB-B  I am still researching when he came over.  1841 looks like it is the right time frame and the right name, but it would be nice to find him in the Ireland records to confirm.  Regarding Peter, the census was done in June of 1860 and he died in November.  I found his probate record.  As you know, Rodger (Roger) and Peter were living next to each other in Mercer county in 1860.  So, the odds are very high that they are brothers or at least related.  Regarding Roger's head stone...I think the date of 1811 is wrong.  If you look the census record the dates vary widely...1850 he is 35 (so, 1815), 1860 his is 38 (so, 1822), 1870 he is 53 (so 1817) and in 1880 he is 61 (so, 1819).  Once we find his birth record, the mystery will be solved.  Let me know if you find any more details or clarifications.
