Looking for possible relatives that still reside in Tuam, county Galway. My g,g,great grandfather, Edmund Rooney married Mary Higgins. Their children were John, Ellen, Mary, Martin and Edmund, all born in 1830s in Tuam. Rooney children and cousins, the Higgins settled in St. Louis, Missouri.

I can be reached at : Johnlrooney@aol.com

Thanks,

I assume your family were Roman Catholic. The subscription site Roots Ireland has Tuam RC records back to 1790. I located a January 29 1824 marriage in Tuam for a Mary Higgins and and an Edmund Runu. I assume this record is for your ancestors. However, I could not locate the baptismal records for any children which means they likely moved to another parish which does not have records back to 1824.

The 1901 census does show five Rooney families in Tuam civil parish so the surname was in the area at that time.

You may want to consider a standard DNA test to identify matches on your Rooney line. They could be anywhere in the world but they may have more info on the family origins.

Let me know what questions you have.

  • Hi John

Good possibility that Martin Rooney born 5th August 1833, a Widower, married Catherine Coen 1870 in Tuam. They are on 1901 Census at Bishop St., Tuam. Victualler on Marriage Certificate and Census.
