He married Bridget Donne in  Nenagh co Tipperary 07/6/1856.  First born Bridget 20/9/1858 co Kilkenny, second child born Henry baptised 22/7/1860 curragh camp co Kildare. John was in the 14th  regiment on foot in around 1861/2 he was posted to New Zealand and his whole family went with him. Having two more children born there and a few years later being posted to Australia and another child born there . John Ruth was my great grandfather. It says on his  military papers he was 23  and a half  years old when he joined up in 1858,  my name is rose. Hope it’s of some help to any Ruth family.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

You did not mention John's religious denomination but the subscription site Roots Ireland had two RC baptismal records in 1831 and 1834. The 1831 record was in Gowran and the surname was trascribed as Rothe. See below.

  • Sorry John was Roman catholic first child born was  Bridget and I’m almost 99% sure that Bridget Walsh and John Ruth were his parents . It just that I couldn’t find John Ruth’s  registration in the parish of Pitt gowran Kilkenny. I also meant to say John was my G,G grandfather his daughter was my G grandmother born in New Zealand in 1864. She married my great grandfather Mathew Tier who was born in Dublin 1864 parish of st Catherine’s cork st . Mathew and Margaret married in Malta. Margaret died in Limerick city in 1927. Mathew Tier died in 1900 and buried in Aldershot Hampshire England.

The second record above shows Bridget Walsh as the mother although Richard Richard Ruth was the father.

  • Sorry of course Richard Ruth was John’s father and Bridget Walsh his mother, I’m sure that’s why their first child was called Bridget, thanks for pointing out my mistakes, Rosie.

The 1831 record from Gowran above has parents Father:John RotheMother:Margaret Kenedy

The 1834 record from Ballyhale  shows the parents as   Father:Richard RuthMother:Bridget Walsh

I don't know which of the two (or neither) are the John Ruth that you are seeking.
