Great grandfather was Thomas Francis Ryan (TFR) born circa 1862 in Castleconnell (Sallymount) and died 21 Jan 1940 in Surrey, England.

Siblings were Ned (b. 1850), Anne (b. 1857), Mary (b. 1860) Patrick (b.1855), John (b. 1868), Margaret (b. 1871) and possibly a Bridget

Parents were Patrick Valentine Ryan (born circa 1828 and died 1903) and Bridget Ryan (nee Torpey) (born circa 1831 and died 1913.  Grandfather was Edward Ryan (born 1799 and died 1871).

Address is given as Sallymount as well as Ballynacourty.  Two bedroom cottage across N7 from Herberts Bar is the said property.  Census 1901 and 1911 census records indicate TFR's mother lived there with Bridget (nee Ryan) Osborne and Michael Osborne, along with their one son John Osborne.  (A second boy Patrick Ryan died in infancy)

Gravestone erected by TFR at Stradbally Parish (also as All Saints Church and has both RC and Protestants) has buried Edward Ryan, Bridget Ryan (nee Torpey), Patrick Valentine Ryan ("snr") and Patrick Ryan ('jnr"), Margaret Ryan and Mary Foy (nee Ryan).

Trying to determine:

  • Siblings of TFR's father Patrick Valentine Ryan
  • Marriage and/or death dates of Ned, Anne and John
  • The link to a Dennis and Thomas Ryan (grandchildren listed on the 1901 census at Ballynacourty with Bridget and Patrick Ryan...unless not related..)
  • The John Ryan (deceased) at time of Bridget Osborne (nee Ryan)'s wedding in 1904 to try and connect family link to John Osborne
  • Death dates and burial sites for each of Bridget Osborne and Michael Osborne

  • Hi there,

There are Roman Catholic church records for the diocese of Castleconnell (KIllaloe). These date from 1850 for baptismal records and 1863 for marriage records. You can find these at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 2477. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance. This is a little late for TFR's father. It still might be worth contacting the parish priest anyway.

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm Again these are too late.

For marriage /deaths you really need a more precise location. Perhaps they are buried in the same graveyard?

Someone in the local community might be able to help you further with your questions.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney

    Genealogist (Ireland XO)
