Hello I am trying to find some heritage information about my family. My father had started a family tree and found a little information. It appears my great grandfather as well as possibly at least two generations before were born in County Galway, (Abbey?) Loughrea. My father had listed the birthplaces as Abbey Loughrea, but I could only find Loughrea, as a specific place.

My great, great grandfather was Patrick Ryan born 1835 died 1912, and great grandfather was Martin Alfred Ryan born Nov. 6th 1884 died Jan 2nd 1960 in Boston MA, USA.

I have some limited additional family tree information I can provide if there are any leads.

I would love to trace the family back further and possibly come expore the area where my family name has come from, as well as any family history.

Thanks for any help or advice on how to learn more about my heritage.

  • Hi Shamus-Martin Ryan.B. 6/11/1884. Abbey. P.-Patrick Ryan &Maria Ryan(Haverty). Reg 17/1/1885 Portumna. Abbey was in the Portumna Poor Law Union, hence the registration in  Portumna .  Details from Irish Genealogy.ie.Abbey Village is almost equidistant from Loughrea & Portumna. There is still at least one Ryan in Abbey.-Liam irwin.

  • Liam,

Thanks so much for writing. I was able to use the infromation you sent to confirm my great, great, great grandfather Peter Ryan was a land tenant of the Burkes in Abbey. I am hoping to dig even deeper, past Peter Ryan into our family history and have a great place to start thanks to your help!

    Cheers,

  • I know that I am late to this conversation but my mother was a Ryan and her family left County Galway and arrived in Philadelphia 9 Dec 1850. SO I am often researching Ryans. My gg grandfather John Ryan died on the ship on the way. So I know little about my Galway Ryans.

Recently I found a Margaret Ryan born 1845 in Loughrea Galway- died in Philadelphia1922 , Father was Martin Ryan and mother was Mary Burk. Her sister, Mary Burke Hughes (husband John Hughes) was born in 1848 to Martin Ryan and Mary Burk in Loughrea, County Galway and she died in Philadelphia in 1933.

i recommend looking at your DNA matches for Ryans to get a hint of where to start and seeing if you can trace them back to Ireland.

  • Hi Marge,

Thanks for writing. We must have a connection somewhere down the line as my Great Grandfather was Martin Alfred Ryan born in Loughrea in 1884. He is who immigrated to the states but went to Boston. His father was Patrick Ryan, born in 1835, Loughrea, son of Peter Ryan born 1792.

It must have been another chain I was in on here but a lady had been researching the Galway Ryans and found a family grave site in a little town of Abbey. I was back in November and went out to the site, a very rural place but quite lovely. I found the headstone, with a little help from a wonderful local lady at the Kilnalehin Priory, a landmark for being the only Carthusian monastery in Ireland. It was a wonderful experience and with a little investigating I discovered there are still Ryans in Abbey who own and run a farm there. John Ryan is the head of that family I believe but I didn't get much further than that. I checked out Loughrea also, nice little town.

I see a lot about the Tipperary Ryans, but not much in regards to the Galway branch so it is exciting to hear this information from you! My father has done a lot more research than I, and probably has more information about the Ryans in that area.

Here is a pic of the headstone in Abbey. Peter Ryan_1.png
