Looking for family information on one Samuel R Hughes.  I found in the recording of his death that indicates he was born in Dublin Ireland on 20 Feb 1841 but have not been able to find any documentation backing that up.  I've found his Certificate of Competency as Master in the Merchant Service dated 23 Dec 1865. In June of 1869 he was the Captain of a ship named William Carvill. In 1870 he immigrated to North America and died in 1892.

    A search of www.findmypast.ie and rootsireland.ie - Subscription Sites - did not show any Samuel Hughes having been born in Dublin. There is a record of a Samuel Hughes born in Desertmartin in Co. Derry on April 22nd1838.

    Attached some records in relation to his travels.

    Thanks for the information as it matches up with what I had already found.  However, I just found a passport application for the person we believe was his wife that indicates he was born in Dublin in 1841, died in 1892 but immigrated to the United States in 1856.  I have a marriage license for them but it only states that they are of legal age and does not give date of birth, place of birth, or parents.

    Guess I need to keep looking for another Samuel Hughes who was not a seaman.

    Could you please send me the information on the Samuel Hughes born in Desertmartin?  I'll run with that to see if I can find immigration information on him.

    Subscription site www.rootsireland.ie has 4 "Samuel Hughes" 1837 - 1845.

    Samuel Hughes in Desertmartin - address: Lecumpher. Church of Ireland. Father: Willliam - Mother Catherine. No surname for Catherine.

    Three other "Samuel's" recorded who are Roman Catholic: 1837 - Wexford - 1843 Louth - 1845 Co. Down.

    Hughes was a common name in Dublin in the 1800's. Many were members of the Quaker Religion, (Society of Friends).
