Hi

I am from New Zealand and have established that my great-grandfather was born in the Parish of Killeentierna. His name was John Scannell, he was born 9 Jun 1838 and his parents were Patrick and Julia (nee Walsh) whose address was "Lahern".

John immigrated to New Zealand in 1866 and  I would love to know if there are any family still living in Ireland.

As a keen rugby fan I noticed two Scannells play for Munster and Ireland but can't establish if we are related.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and regards

Mathew Scannell

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I looked at the records for the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie  and found the June 29 1837 marriage record for the parents plus baptismal records for five siblings to John: Honora 1843 Julia 1854 Jeremiah 1840 Mary 1846 Johanna 1857 From the baptismal records, it appears that Patrick and Julia moved around the parish over the years. There were living in Laharan townland initially (John and Jeremiah) then moved to a place called Carrigalina (Honora). Carrigalina is not an offical townland but for the last three records (Mary, Johanna, Julia), they were living in the townland of Kilfelim. They may have been other children so you may want to scan the register https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0664

The 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing has Patrick Scannell listed in Kilfelim https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/kerry/killeentierna.htm

Patrick Scannell died in June 1890 at age 80  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1890/06101/4741247.pdf

Julia Scannell died at age 80 in 1892  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1892/06040/4720692.pdf

Johanna Scannell married  Jeremiah Shea in 1874       https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1874/11241/8122064.pdf

There were no Scannells in Kilfelim (or nearby townlands) in the 1901 census. However, Jeremiah Shea and Johanna Shea were there with their children http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Kerry/Kilfelin/Kilfelin/1418755/

  • Dear Roger

Many thanks for your very detailed message about my Great Gandfather, John Scannell's family. I have updated my family tree and added the details of Johanna Scannell's children as well.

I really appreciate your help but think I will struggle to establish a link to living family in Ireland until the Census of 1926 is released or if you could recommend a reliable Irish genealogy website that would help provide up to date information. On the bright side I have established where John was baptised so I have a place to visit when we next travel to Ireland, hopefully next year!

    Thanks and regards

    Mathew

Initally, I did not pull up the 1911 census reocrd for Jeremiah O'Shea and Johanna Scanell. I just looked at the record  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Kerry/Kilfelin/Kilfelim/270557/

and it showed that Johanna had 14 children but by 1911 only 4 were living which means that 3 of the 7 children (Hanna, Lizzie and Patrick) in the 1901 census died between 1901 and 1911. I was not able to locate death records.

You could search on www.irishgenealogy.ie for civil marriage records for the four children (Michael, Mollie, Julia and John). I did search for Michael and as far as I can see he likely did not marry. I did find a 1920 marriage record for Julia and Jeremiah was still alive (see link). I tried to search for Mollie but the search reverts to Mary and there are many Mary Shea records. Same with John Shea. When you have time, you may want to search the records for Mary and John. They lived in the Killarney registration district.

Again many thanks for the additional information which I have added to my Family Tree. I think the only way to link back to Ireland is to somehow find out what happened to Jeremiah John's younger brother. I will keep trying!

    Thanks again
