Matthew Barry Scott was born in Tureen, Ballybricken Parish, Limerick, on January, 1850, to John Scott and Mary Grimes; sponsors were William Crow and Ellen Scott.  It is possible that John Scott was the son of George Scott and Joanne Maloney and the brother of Richard Scott.  Matthew Scott immigrated to America in 1870 and settled in upstate New York where he married Marry J. Kelley and then Margaret Reagan. His brother John F. Scott also moved to upstate New York. Immigration records show that Matthew B. Scott came over with in June 1870 with James Scott (32) and John Scott (28).  He is my great grandfather on my mother's side. He purchased farm land in Ontario, New York.  He was a foreman in the iron ore strip mining operation in Ontario.  A town history even features a miners' song that referred to him. I am trying to verify that John Scott is the son of George Scott and Joanna Maloney. I am also trying to determine what happened to his siblings.

  • Bob,

I am sorry to take so long to get back to you. I return to genealogy in fits and starts. Thank you for responding. It is great to hear from a cousin on the Scott side of my family.

Matthew Scott settled in Ontario, New York, a small town where I grew up. Ontario was mainly farming but now is more of a suburban community outside of Rochester, New York.  Matthew married Mary Kelly and purchased land from Mary's father. He and Mary had five children when Mary died young. Matthew quickly married Margaret Reagan with whom he had two more children. One of those was Sarah, my grandmother. Sarah married Monro Cass and they managed a farm in Ontario for fifty years. I had many cousins living close by as I grew up. Most have now moved away from Ontario but I still have two cousins there and others around Rochester.

John F. Scott settled on the west side of Rochester and married Julia Murphy. They did not have children and I don't know much about them, though I do have a picture of Julia. Mary Scott married John Ahern but I know very little about her. I remember some of my Scott cousins but most had scattered around the country or died off when I was young.

I would be interested to know if you have information going back further than John Scott and Mary Grimes. I found some evidence that John's parents may have been George Scott and Joanna Maloney. I am interested in what became of Joanna, George, Mary and Sarah, Matthew's siblings.

My email address is earthexps@frontiernet.net if you would like to contact me directly.

Again, thank you for connecting and sorry that it took so long for me to respond.

  • Hello from one of your Scott cousins in California! I was quite happy to stumble across your conversation. I hope you don't mind if I chime in. My mother's gr-gr-grandparents were Richard Scott and Hannah Ryan of Toureen, who are surely related to your John Scott and Mary Grimes. Two of Richard and Hannah's daughters emigrated to San Francisco in the 1850's: Ellen, who married a Magrane from Dublin, and her sister Mary, who married John O'Brien from Toureen (son of Patrick O'Brien and Margaret Moloney) before they left Ireland. Both families were very successful farming in Sonoma County and building houses in San Francisco. (If you have ever seen the movies Ant-Man or Ant-Man and the Wasp, you cannot have missed the beautiful Queen Anne Victorian that Ellen Scott Magrane built in 1895 in San Francisco as a widow. It's the star of the show.) I don't have any evidence to help you determine the parentage of your John Scott but I am always happy to chat and just share information about our Scotts.

it's nice to "meet" you. Anne annedeibert@gmail.com
