Hello All,  My name is Linda Hannan Radcliff.  I am attempting to research my Hannan family, and all various spellings.   I did find a James Hannan son of John Hannan ( who I believe is my 2nd great grandfather) who Married Elizabeth Letford daughter of Robert Letford on the 11 April, 1855 at the Church of Ireland in Boyle, County Roscommon, Ireland.   Was wondering if there was any further information available on this  James Hannan Family?  Did they continue to stay in the area?   At some point they migrated to the United States and they are located on the 1870 United States Federal Census in St. Louis Missouri .  Now what makes this Hannan Line so difficult to research, is the fact that there is an inherited disease which runs in the family line.  It is known as Huntingtons Chorea or HD as it is now known.   Several family members have inherited it, fortunaely for me my father did not come down with the disease and therefore it has stopped in my line.     Any information would be so helpful.  Thank you for any assistance you can offer

.
Warm Regard,
Linda Hannan Radcliff

  • Linda:

I located the civil marriage record for John and Elizabeth   https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1855/09485/5437427.pdf

The record shows the names of their fathers. Both fathers were constables and James Hannan was a constable. Note: the record appears to indicate "late of constabulary"   Likely the families were not from Boyle since constables were not assigned to their home county.

  • Roger,   Thank You for your quick reply and for the explanation of "late of constabulary"   This Family is my "Brick  Wall"   From what I have located here in the states,  James and Elizabeth must have migrated to the US some time after their marriage,  between 1855 and 1860.   I did locate them in the census records of 1870 in Saint Louis, Missouri with their children all being born in Missouri,    Later I located a record that states James was supposedly born in Silgo County Ireland.?  So far I have been unable to locate any further info.   This inherited Disease makes researching this line so hard, not to mention the fact that I have all various spellings HANNAN, HANNON, HANNEN

  • Linda:

I checked the subscription site Roots Ireland but was unable to find  a James Hannan baptismal record around 1831. Only a few Church of Ireland parishes have baptisms on Roots Ireland 1831 or earlier.

  • Eileen and Roger, Thank you both for your assistance.   It is very helpful as I did have dsome misd information.   Eileen can you make out what Robert Letford's occupation is?    It seems that James Johnston, James Hannan, and Robert Letford were all with the police dept.

    Thank you again ,

  • It reads that he is a Mason but I have come across many entries of Letfords and Hannons which have a police/RIC/constabulary connection.

  • Eileen, Yes that is what I have found also.   Maybe this was before or after the Police Dept.   Or Possibly another Robert Letford ?    Just an FYI  Although I spell my last name HANNAN as my father, some of my fathers siblings spelled it HANNON ?     Well since I am not having much luck with the surname of HANNAN, I'LL search for  Elizabeth's brother JOSEPH LETFORD, as he did immigrate with the family in 1855 /1857 .  Perhaps that will turn up something.

Thank you again for your help
