Good morning,

For years, I've been trying to find information about my maternal great-grandfather's father John Michael Nunan and his parents. My great grand-father was born May 7, 1890 and named Joseph Noel Nunan.  After his mother Mathilde Chevrier died from childbirth, he was raised by family members and took the family name Chevrier.  I have not been able to find any trace whatsoever for John Micheal Nunan past his wife's death entry in Church registry in Quyon, Quebec, other than he apparently remarried in1909-1910 in Ottawa, Ontario.  John Micheal Nunan has also used the name Jean MIchel, John Mitchell and maybe other ones too, all variations of his actual name.  If anyone has any leads, however small or who could help me, it would be so greatly appreciated.  I know that we originally came from Co. Cork, but don't from where exactly, nor when.  Thank you.

  • Saoirse, I have searched under various headings on Irish Genealogy site and can only find one Joseph Noonan (spelling given on cert) with father John in 1891 in Millstreet (In Cork near Kerry Border)  however the mother is Sullivan, only interesting thing is the fathers occupation is given as pensioner of US army. There is no death of a Mathilde Nunan or Noonan (both come back) I searched all female Nunan deaths from 1887 to 1893 and only found 2 of childbearing age who died (some died listed as spinster) Again no Mathilde, you can search for free yourself here https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ Sign in etc, only church records for Cork; Kerry and Dublin.

I found nothing on the name Chevier either marriage or otherwise, civil registration only started in 1864 but you should find your people if registered, it is a good idea in Ireland to state religion as this will indicate what church records to seek out, some smaller religions may not have online records.

Is is possible the marriage took place outside Ireland.

    Good Luck
