I am seeking details relating to my Father's family who lived at 23 James Place Kilkenny Ireland. The last known relative living at that address, was my Aunt Tess MgGowan, my father's niece. My father's parents were Michael and Mary Teehan (maiden name not known). My grandmother came from County Mayo. My father had 5 brothers - Michael, William, Patrick, Peter and Richard and one sister Mary. My father's middle name is the only one I have, nor do I dates of birth or death for his relatives. I am trying to build a family tree for my grandson but so far, have had only very limited success. Ancestry.com has been of very little value. If anyone can help me to find out more about my ancestors, I would very much appreciate that.

Kind regards, Pat Borgardt

  • Hi Pat,

I attach copy of Church and State records which appear to relate to your query. Mary Teehan (Gibbons) according to the 1911 census was born in County Mayo.

The Church record states she was from Aughagower which is on the East side of Westport town in Co. Mayo, off the road to Ballinrobe.

Michael is recorded as a "Widower".

Those records will help you to track down his siblings and their various families. PS - 1901 should read 1911

  • Hi Pat,

Further to previous post, Michael Teehan married Ellen Hoyne in 1890. According to records on www.rootsireland.ie - Subscription Site, the following children were born: James 1891, Twins - Bridget and John 1893 - Twins - Mary and William 1894.

Check the 1901 census for further information.

  • Dear McCoy - sorry I don't know your christian name.

Thank you kindly for the information you have given me. It is invaluable in my search for my past. I planned to visit Ireland this year to conduct searches of cemeteries etc, but will do so next year, by which time I hope life has returned to normal for all of us.

Thanks also for sending me the rootsireland.ie. website information. I am looking forward to exploring it.

    Kind Regards, Pat

  • Hi Pat,

The photo attached was taken in Foulkstown cemetry in Kilkenny. It may be of some help to you as the names and address are similar.
