I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and found an April 20 1884 (born April 14 1884) baptismal record for a Matthew Malley in the parish of Ballyconneely in Co. Galway. Father was John Malley and mother Anne Carrol .  They lived in Mannin. If I have the correct Mannin, the civil parish is Ballindoon.

I searched for a related civil birth record but so far I have not found the record.

Matthew had younger siblings: Thomas 1888 Mary 1890 Winifred 1896 Margaret 1898 Bartholomew 1900.

    Is this your family?

Here is the 1900 civil birth record for Bartholomew. See eighth record at the link below.

The 1901 census records shows surname as Melia and there are more children then the six I provided earlier.

  • Thank you,Roger and Patricia, very excited to receive your posts.
It could well be my Grandfather, I know that he came from a large family but I only know two names that is his father John and a younger daughter Mary.
I also know that Mathias signed up in 1901 with the Navy and lied about his age saying he was 18yrs old.
This is a great start for me but because I'm a real amateur at this I'm not really sure where I go from here to prove that this is indeed my lineage.

  • John's:

Can you locate the death record for Matthew/Matthias which may show his mother's maiden name? Which country was he living in when he died.

  • Also, do you have Matthias's military records? They might help confirm that the above Matthias is the correct one.

  • Hi, Roger/Patricia,
Matthias died in the uk in 1946 the only other name on the certificate was my fathers.
I have his wedding cert that says his father was John O'Malley.
I have a record of his Navy history. He signed up in 1901 saying he was born in 1884 but as I said my father told me that he lied to get in and that he was sixteen at the time. The only member of Mathias's family my father met was Mary she was with an elder brother but my father couldn't remember his name, my father was about 10 at the time.
On his Navy rec he says that his place of birth was Errismore.

Ignore all the spam comments from Leeroy Jenkins. He has commented on a number of messages. I've asked the IRO staff to delete all the comments.

Errismore or Erris More is not an official townland anywhere in Ireland so I'm not sure what the next step is. For now the family I sent you looks like the best lead but we need more confirmation to prove or disprove.

  • Roger,
Thank you, I guessed he was. When I looked it up it turned out to be the name of the peninsula, I think this also was given to cover his tracks. It's in his naval records. All the names associated with him is roughly in the same area.Derrygimla , Ballindoon, Roundstone, Mannin, and there is a house called Errismore again in the same area.
Thank you again for the lead.
    Best wishes.

  • Hi Johno,

I think this may be your Matthias, born in Co. Galway.

--Matthias Mealia born 9 April 1884, birth registered in Clifden district:

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1884/02687/1989658.pdf

--Parents: John Mealia, Celia Anne Carroll of Dalyhill townland

--Birth registered by Celia Carroll of Mananmore (probably Mannin More)

    --Matthias’s parents’ marriage in 1884: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1884/10904/5982952.pdf

This record says her townland is “Mannin” and his is “Derrygimla [Derrygimlagh}.” These places are about 12 miles from Roundstone.

His father was named Matthias, hers was Patrick Carroll.

--They had several other children, including a Mary.

    I hope this helps.

  • Thank you once again for making my life easier. With your help, I am starting to get the hang of the searches. It's very addictive but I'm also learning about the history and living conditions of the 1880s.
