I found Thomas Caffray and Anne Reilly marriage record for 26 November 1825 in Lurgen. I have also located 4 children born to this couple (called Gaffeny) in Ballymachugh, Lisduff, Cavan. they are Henry, brn 5 Jul 1839; John, born Sept 1841; Patrick, born 17 Jan 1844, and Francis, born 1846. John is my great grandfather. I am trying to find out if Thomas and Anne Gaffney/Caffray had any other children born in Lurgen before these four. I would also like to know any further information about either Thomas or Anne. Thank you so much.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find any other baptismal records for children of Thomas and Anne. Roots Ireland has the Lurgan records for the period in question 1825-1839 so my guess is that after marriage Thomas and Anne moved to the Ballymachugh area. Baptismal records for Ballymachugh as you likely know do not begin until November 1837 so no records would be available for children before Henry.

Thank you . Does it seem likely that the couple would marry in 1825 and have no children until 1839? Is there any other way to search church records for Ballymachugh before 1837?

No records in Ballymachugh pre-November 1837. Likely there were other children before Henry but church records.
The 1855 Grifffiths Valuation head of household listing for Ballymachugh civil parish shows six Gaffney records. No Thomas or Anne listed. https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/cavan/ballymachugh.php

I have found on rootsireland.ie severalother children born to Thomas and Anne Gafney. They were born in Castlerahan, county Cavan from 1832 to 1837. Is this parish close to Ballymachugh in Cavan? In addiiton I found another child, Anne Gafney born in 1830 at Ballinabrackey in co. Westmeath and a thomas Gaffney baptized in St. Mary Pro Cathedral, dublin on Oct. 1828. Is there any way to verify if these children are from the same parents? thank you so much for being so patient with me and replying.

Gafken:
No way to tell if the other records you located are for the same parents. Castlerahan parish is two RC parishes to the east of Ballymachugh. Ballinabrackey is a good distance away and obviously Dublin is further away. Usually the maiden name of the mother is shown on baptismal records so since all three of the records from Castlerahan show Gaffney as the surname for the mother. I do note that the sponsors for Matthew were Reillys but Reilly is an extremely common surname in Cavan.

Thank you for replying. The serch goes on. I am going to see if any of the other chidlren I found eventually have marriag or baptisms that might indicate their mother's maiden name.

In my research, I have located Henry Gaffney, brother of John Gaffney, my great great grandfather. He was born on July 5, 1839. I located a marriage record for Henry Gaffney and Alice Coyle from Find My Past which indicates they were married on July 31, 1871 in Crosserlough, Kilmore, Cavan. According to the 1911 Ireland Census, they had 8 children of whom 6 were living.at that time. Thank you. My question is, how can I know that this Henry is brother to my great great grandfather John, who emigrated to the US? The civil registration forms that I found for each child indicated ithey lived in Kilbride, Cavan. Another Henry Gaffney who married Ellen Cooke June 25, 1860, had 12 childrn with her and also lived in Kilbride, Cavan. Neither marriage certificate that I have found lists Thomas Gaffney as the father of either of these Henry's. that space appears to be blank on the forms. Is there anyone who can help me straighten this out? Thank you.

Gafken:
The civil marriage record for the 1871 marriage between Henry Gaffney and Alice Coyle shows the father of this Henry was Patrick. (see third record on page). So this Henry was not a brother of your John.

Thank you for pointing that out. I found another Henry Gaffney married to Maria Brady in 1872. The civil record for his father's name is difficult to read but I think it says Thomas. I am going to pursue that lead.
