Hello,
I have reached a deadend searching for information about my ancestry, Manus McAtamney (b. 1807)..His parents may have been named Thomas and Rose. Manus McAtamney died on December 3, 1870 in Tamlaght His wife was Jane McTeer. I’m interested in finding where Manus was born, his parents and any siblings.
Thank you for any information.

Grace,
Your ancestor died in Tyanee or Tyance townland, and was a farmer. Looking at the tithe applotment records for 1833 there were 8 McAtamney farms there then:

No mention of Manus so possibly he was still living with his parents. So one of those may be his father. (I note you think his father may have been Thomas. There is no Thomas on the list).
Manus is listed in Griffiths Valuation for 1859 for Tyanee (plot 25 an 11 acre farm) so at least you know where he lived (Ned’s Brae, on the Old Tyanee Rd).
There were about 11 McAtamney households in Tyanee in the 1831 census. None headed by Manus, so again that suggests he was still living with parents or someone else. No Thomas. Names were Daniel, Shane, Bernard, Edd, Hugh (2), Michael, John, Mary (likely a widow), Henry & Nogher (a variant of Conor).
Greenlough RC parish records don’t start till 1846 so assuming that’s where Manus was born, as seems very likely for a farming family, you won’t find his baptism, and it will be hard to get back much further. Have you looked for family gravestones? That might throw up his parents names.
If the family followed the traditional naming pattern, you might be able to speculate on his parents names from that. Don’t rely on it too heavily because not everyone followed it rigidly and many things could skew it, such as a child dying, or where people had the same name.
The 1st son was usually named after the father's father
The 2nd son was usually named after the mother's father
The 3rd son was usually named after the father
The 4th son was usually named after the father's eldest brother
The 5th son was usually named after the mother's eldest brother
The 1st daughter was usually named after the mother's mother
The 2nd daughter was usually named after the father's mother
The 3rd daughter was usually named after the mother
The 4th daughter was usually named after the mother's eldest sister
The 5th daughter was usually named after the father's eldest sister
Incidentally, Tyanee is in Tamlaght O’Crilly civil parish, rather than Tamlaght. There’s also a Tamlaght Finlagan parish nearby. Useful to know to avoid searching the wrong records.

ELWYN,
You have provided me with wonderful information! I’m confident that I will now be able to uncover a few more details about my McAtamney ancestors. Even if I have come to the end of my search, your information has given me a clearer picture of my ancestor.
Thank you for a clear explanation of the traditional naming pattern. I will definitely keep the pattern in mind for my future searches.
Thanks again!

Hi, I think my ancestor Thomas Timoney (McAtamney) was from Tyanee, his father was Michael and his mother a Mary Ann Henry. Thomas was born around 1850 and moved to Glasgow. Michael might have been born around 1825. Do you know where I could find any more info?
Thanks,
Mick

Mick,
Death of Mary McAtamney in Tyanee in 1884 aged 80. She was a widow. Age might be out by 10 years or more. That wasn’t uncommon.
Informant niece Biddy McAtamney of same townland, niece. This might be her in the 1901 census:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Claudy/Tya…
Griffiths Valuation of 1859 lists Michael McAtamney farming plot 63a in Tyanee. He was farming with James McAtamney (plot 63b) and 2 others. 30- acres. His name is deleted in 1871 and replaced by James. I cannot find a death for Michael 1864 - 1884.
A James McAtamney in Tyanee in the 1901 census:

His wife was Catherine Scullion.
Probate of the Will of James McAtamney late of Tyanee Portglenone County Londonderry Farmer who died 10 July 1906 granted at Londonderry to Teady McErlean (Junior) Merchant and William Wilson Farmer
McAtamney James of Tyanee county Londonderry and of Bootle Street Liverpool farmer died 5 April 1910 at Bootle Street Liverpool Administration Londonderry 19 April to Teady McErlean merchant. Effects £75 15s. Limited Grant.
RC baptism records for Greenlough list the baptism of James McAtamney to Michael & Mary Ann on 18.5.1854.

There were 11 Henery households in Tynaee in the 1831 census, so possibly Mary Ann was born there too.
