Hello!  My great grandmother was Mary Anne (Kellett) Clement.  She was born in Quebec, Canada.  My understanding is her father, Patrick Kellett, emigrated to Canada from Ireland.  I believe they were from County Cavan.  I would love to connect with my Irish cousins.   My email address is lynnrutman@gmail.com.  Sincerely, Lynn of Cotuit, Massachusetts, USA

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

In the mid-19th century, the surname Kellett was primarily found in Co. Cavan and Co. Meath. Within Co. Cavan, the surname was found in a number of civil parishes. Do you have an approximate year of birth for Patrick and was the family RC or Church of Ireland. (The Kelletts in the 1901 census for Cavan were both RC and C of I). Without knowing Patrick's parents names, it will be difficult to confirm any record we might locate.

    Have you considered DNA testing?

  • Dear Roger:  thank you so very much for responding!  According to information received from a distant cousin, Patrick Kellett was born in 1835 in Ireland.  He married Mary Brady who was born in 1840 in Ireland as well.  I was told they were both born in County Cavan.

Patrick and Mary emigrated to Canada in 1830 on a ship called, “Mary of Dublin.”   I was told they were one of the original settlers of Durham, Quebec which is a/k/a St. Pierre de L’Avenir.

Patrick is buried in Durham, but I don’t know the date he died.  Mary is also buried in Quebec.  Their children include, my great grandmother, Mary Ann Kellett (1860-1932) and sons, Thomas, John, Bernard, and James.   Mary Ann was born in Quebec, emigrated to Massachusetts with her husband and children and is buried in Milford, Massachusetts.

I hope this helps!  Best regards, lynn

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find a Patrick Kellett baptismal record from 1830-1840. Also, did not find a marriage record and was not sure if they married in Canada or Ireland. You did not mention the religious denomination for Patrick but I will assume RC. A good number of Cavan RC parishes.( at least ten) do not have records back to 1835 which explains why a record did not turn up on Roots Ireland. I did not search for Mary Brady because that is a very common name in Cavan.

Sorry I could not be more helpful but DNA testing may be beneficial.

  • Thank you so much Roger!  I do appreciate your efforts!  You’re right....they were both RC.  Forgot to mention that.  Also I did do a DNA test with 23andme.com.  I uploaded my DNA to gedmatch but I’m not sure what that does to help.  I didn’t notice any Kelletts or Brady surnames on Gedmatch.  I do so appreciate your help tho!  Best regards, Lynn

On Gedmatch, you can do a one to many match which will give you up to 500 matches from cloest to more distant. Most people do not have a Gedcom file on Gedmatch so I e-mail my closest matches and try to find out where the connection is.
