  • Hi Maria

The reality of finding surviving documentation for births/deaths/marriages in Ireland prior to the 19th century is that they may not actually exist. Church records for the majority of the island only begin circa 1800 and civil registration records start in 1864. You might check http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/ a site which allows you to 'BROWSE' information available for each County.

Some other sites you might try - if you haven't already- are:

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you.

Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Maria, Lancelot was my gggg grandfather and I have been trying for years to find out exactly where he was born and married before he moved to Edinburgh. I know his wife died in Edinburgh in 1866, aged 74, death registered by her daughter Martha. I have my family tree on Genes Reunited, let me know if you would like to have access to this.

    Regards

  • Hi Karen,

It is so exciting that we share a gggg grandfather I have only been trying for the last year I cannot find anything in Ireland on Lancelot Moreland although one of the census show Antron - which i interpret as Antrim, when I looked on Irish roots I can see quite a few Moreland's around the time of his alleged birth but no Lancelot,  I have irish roots on all side of my family and so does my husband, I have managed to locate one of his relations James Maxwell born in Belfast and I have got his baptisimal certificate today.  I am currently using ancestry.com.au as we are in australia it has helped a fair bit but I find the scottish records online are the best up until the early 1800's when it reverts to the church records only.  I am off to Ireland in February so fingers crossed I locate something,  i also have a geneologist in Ireland checking for me but they did not give much hope I am afraid I will let you know when I find something, which I am sure I will I am becoming a bit of a detective and so many pieces of the puzzle to fit together, I will be in Edinburgh for a few days also, and I will be visiting the area of Spences street where the moreland family appeared to have lived for most of their lives in Edinburgh, are you connected to the Ketchen line also?

    regards

Maria Irvine (another Irish name) oh so many but I am loving the link to Ireland.

  • Hi Maria, my family line comes down through William Moreland (Martha's brother), then his son Adam and his daughter Jane (my great granny who I remember very well). Where the Morelands lived in 1841 in Spencer Place is near Newhaven which used to be a busy fishing Port, not far from the centre of Edinburgh. They then moved to around the Fountainbridge part of the town, which is where my grandparents and my dad grew up.

I live in Melbourne but I grew up in Edinburgh so I know the area very well, so if you need to know where anything is just ask.

Good luck and I look forward to hearing from you.

    Regards

    Karen

  • Hi Karen,

I am a bit confused now, the census report for Moreland said they came from “St Cuthbert’s” district

Spence’s place which is north of the bridges I think.  I will have another look, Spencer Place seems a rather more exclusive area I had a look on Google maps,

I emigrated to Australia in 1986 so I was also brought up in Edinburgh although I went to boarding school in Berwick upon tweed so I really don’t know the area that well.

Our family remained in Edinburgh only one of my immediate family immigrated to Canada back in the 60’s.  I am the only one who has left Scotland that I am aware off after the Moreland’s came from Ireland, I did not have any information on this side of the family as it was my maternal grandfathers line, his mother unfortunately died a few days after he was born, but through ancestry.com.au I have found out that she married her cousin, and had quite a few children to her first husband which none of the family where aware off.  I am hoping i can find out where  the morelands came from – will let you know if I find anything  out

    Regards

    Maria

  • Hi Maria, I checked the address again and it's Spence's Place, which was around the Morrison Street area but it doesn't exist anymore. Just got the 1861 census records and Lance and Margaret were still living there, both aged 75. I cannot locate a death cert for Lancelot, do you have this? Hope you had a good trip.

    Regards

    Karen
