Hello,

My family is from Newport.

My mom has passed on in 2013 and was the only one to come to US in 1963 at age 21.

I have come across her Irish birth certificate and have got quite a shock!

The names listed as her father is Michael McLoughlin and mother is listed as Sarah McLoughlin née McMahon.

The issue is, my grandmother (who I have visited 5 times in Newport over the years) is named Hanora McLoughlin, married over 50 years to Michael McLoughlin, lived on Black road.

Michael is listed as father, but I have no idea who Sarah is. It’s quite upsetting.

First time using any of these types of sites, so I’m in the dark. Forgive me.

What I know/thought*

Grandfather Michael McLoughlin 1912-1995

He was a fishery warden, nickname Hockey McLoughlin.

Grandmother Hanora McLoughlin? Sarah* on my mom’s birth certificate.

They had 9 children, two who passed in infancy, leaving 7 remaining.

Mary McLoughlin oldest

Teresa McLoughlin

John McLoughlin (passed)

Catherine McLoughlin (mom passed) 1942-2013

Celestine McLoughlin (passed) 2001

Josephine McLoughlin (Now Ryan, last living @ Freigh) married to John Ryan.

Padraig McLoughlin.

I’m hoping to find out who the Sarah is on my mom’s birth certificate, as I’ve always known, Hanora to be my wonderful grandmother.

If anyone can help me find out why there is a different name than I expected, would bring some peace of mind.

Also I posted a drawing under the buildings section. (Not sure if ok) see below.

Somehow the old residence and Bakery that was on Main Street is connected to us, I’ve posted a drawing that was given to my mom by her sister Teresa’s husband Gordon many years ago when she came to visit us in the US.

Thank you in advance for any help.

  • Hi, Do you have birth certs for your mother's siblings? Is their mother called Sarah on any of them? If yes, perhaps Honora was a middle name or nickname, but Sarah was the given name. Just an idea.

  • Hi,

I know this is a long shot since you said that your family was from Newport...I take that to mean the Newport in Co. Mayo....but in the civil records there is a marriage record for a Michael McLoughlin and Nora McMahon on 30 Apr 1936 in the Church of Castleconnell, Limerick. Michael's father is John McLoughlin, a baker; and Nora's father is Patrick, a laborer. One of the witnesses is Kitty (Catherine) McMahon. Given that your grandparents named their two sons John and Padraig, and one of the daughter's Catherine; this could be the record you seek. You mention a bakery being connected to you...not sure of your meaning, but John McLoughlin was a baker.

Sorry I could not attach the marriage record, something went haywire! You can get it on the free site irishgenealogy.ie

    Regards,

  • Hi Patricia, wow you guys are quick. Many thanks!

I don’t have any others, but it is definitely Sarah. I did think Nora and Sarah sound so alike maybe they wrote it wrong, but the lady below your reply did find the marriage certificate only 6 years before my moms birth so I’m wondering if maybe it was a relative who was young and pregnant and they took her as her own. Feeling a bit sad really. When you believe one thing to be true your whole life only to have doubt cast, bit unnerving. Going to keep researching.

Thank you for your replies, I appreciate it. ❤️

  • Hi Carolyn,

    It is Newport, County Tipperary.
I think you have found them!!

Married 1936, I visited right around 86 and it was their 50th Anniversary.

The three children being named after family is another check for me.

All I know about the bakery is it was somehow in my granddads family, so his dad John being a baker is also a green light.

However, the cherry you found was the witness.

I’m thinking maybe she was a sister to my grandmother, but not sure, BUT!!!

My mom’s name: Catherine Nickname was Kitty!!! Catherine “kitty” McLoughlin. It’s got to be them.

I’ll try to find it on that site, and hopefully I can get a copy.

Really appreciate you taking the time and the quick response. Doesn’t answer Sarah dilemma but absolutely thrilled to know the marriage certificate is out there.

    Many many thanks! ❤️🍀
