Hi there.

I am researching my maternal family and have been told that my grandfather James Sheridan was born in Kanturk Workhouse in 1897 to Ellen Sheridan (nee O'Connor) who would have been about 24 years old at the time. She had lived in Castlemagner with her husband, also James Sheridan at some point before, I believe from a little lateral research, near St Bridget's Church.

I cannot find any records relating to James Sheridan or of Ellen O'Connor apart from the name of Ellen's mother, Joanna O'Connor.

My grandfather had two brothers, Timothy, born in 1901 in Kanturk and Timothy, born in 1904 in Mallow. Their mother Ellen moved to London with the two younger boys sometime between 1904 and 1912 and my Grandfather was left in the care of 'nuns' and then at St Joseph's Industrial School for Roman Catholic Boys in Greenmount, Cork. I have found a record for him at this school. He was later to rejoin the rest of the family in London.

Any help with information and records searches will be gratefully received.

In hope.

John

  • Hi John,

Civil records for Kanturk record the birth of a James Sheridan on May 16th 1897 in Kanturk Workhouse. His father is recorded as John Sheridan, Tinsman and his Mother as Ellen Sheridan, formerly O'Connor. Address: Castlemagner. A Timothy Sheridan born in Kanturk Workhouse on April 22nd 1901. His father is recorded as "John Sheridan" - Mother: Ellen Sheridan, formerly Connors. John is a Tinsmith by occupation and his address is shown as Rathkeale, which is in County Limerick.

There is a record of the marriage of a John Sheridan to a Margaret Kenealy on October 25th 1896 in the Roman Catholic church in Newtown Shandrum. John is recorded as Full Age and a Bachelor and a Tinsmith by occupation. His father is recorded as Edmund Sheridan, a Tinsmith. Margaret is recorded as Full age and a widow. Her father is recorded as Jeremiah Sheehan, Labourer. Witnesses: John Riordan and Anne Sheehan.

There is nothing to indicate that the two "John Sheridan's" are one and the same person.

  • Hi McCoy.

Thank you so much for your replies. A lot to think about and research now and interesting that the name John rather than James is in the records. I will have to let my Uncle Jim know as he is the son of my grandfather. All four of his children are still alive including my Mum.

Really glad I found this site and very impressed with the speed of your response. I hope to visit the area in the future now that I'm retired (if only that didn't involve still working!)

    All the best

    John

  • Hi,

I have been working on my Family Ancestry over the past 3 years and I have accumulated a great deal of information on the O'Connor/Fitzpatrick Family

from Castlemagner, Co Cork. Part of that history is of my Gran-Aunt Ellen O'Connor who married John Sheridan in 1891 in Buttevant, Co Cork. They had

3 sons.....John b.1894, Timothy b. 1901 & Patrick b. 1904.  John Snr died due to drowning in the River Lee in Cork in May 1906 aged 40 yrs & his son

John Jnr died shortly after in July 1906 aged 12 yrs of TB.  Ellen moved with her 2 remaining sons to London and married a James Bolton in 1910 in

West Ham, Essex. I was able to follow up to 1939 some of their history as records allowed but I have extensive history going back to the early 1800's

of the families involved. I'd be only too willing to share it all with you. I have attached a page that shows part of that history. My email is ...

paddyinoz1974@gmail.com        .....if you want to contact me. I have lived in Australia for the last 49 yrs but was born in Cork. Hope to hear from you soon.

    Sincerely Yours, Richard O'Sullivan

  • Hi Again John,

I have attached some pdf's to show details of John & Ellen's sons as well as excerpts from the Summary Pages that I have done for my own family history.  The John (Jack) Sheridan Jnr you speak of died at 12  yrs of age in Castlemagner in 1906 and therefore could not have been your grand-uncle. John junior lived with his grandparents in Castlemagner it seems from before the 1901 Census until his death in 1906. Being born in a Workhouse obviously shows that Ellen was struggling with poverty like many others during this time. Makes you appreciate more of what we have today!

Hope this is helpful. Stay safe & well, Richard O'Sullivan

  • Hi Richard.

Great to hear from you and what you have sent is helpful. I've dropped the ball with the family tree a bit although I plan to pick it up again (possibly with the intention of trying for an Irish passport! Brexit is an ongoing disaster!).

I will have a proper look at what you have sent and let you know what I have in terms of family history. I can tell you that my maternal grandfather was James Bolton (Sheridan) and spent some time in Ireland in a Christian Brothers institution before James T.H. Bolton brought him and his brother over and adopted them.

    Thanks again

    John Chapple.
