As far as I can tell, my great-grandfather, Dennis Slattery, left Ballysheen (townland near Abbeydorney) with his mother, Margaret, in the late 1840s.  His father, Daniel Slattery, had already left Ballysheen in the early 1840s to work in upstate NY (Jefferson County).  However, the family lost contact with Daniel in the late 1840s and never heard from him again.  Dennis and his mother eventually settled in Minnesota.

We do not know if Dennis had any siblings or other relations who stayed in the Abbeydorney area.  However, I am hoping that he did, and that we might be able to locate there descendants.

  • Hi there,

You could try checking Roman Catholic church records to check for any recorded names of family members. There are church records available for the diocese of Abbeydorney and these date from 1835 for baptismal records and 1837 for marriage records. You can find these at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 4274. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

You should also check the 1901/1911 census records for family members. You can check this here: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Hopefully, someone in the local community will recognise the name and be able to help you out trying to find living relatives.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney
