I have made numerous searches on two subscription sites (Roots Ireland and FindMyPast) and did not find any records for your family in either Co. Clare or another county in Ireland. Likely the events occurred in a parish which does not have records back to 1861 and earlier.

The closest baptismal record I found for John Carroll was in Slieverue parish in Co. Kilkenny but the record was in 1858. Parents were Simon Carroll and Johanna Kennedy.

The Clare Co. Library has a great genealogy site  https://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/genealog.htm

    Have you considerd DNA testing?

Let me know if you have any questions or other info on your family?

  • Hello Roger!

I think you have looked into my family , I am the Mulligan, Partridge lady! I am working on the Carroll side like I said my Ancestors want to stay hidden. As I gather infromation I am posting small snippets its in the contect of where I am looking and for whom. I do have a question that maybe you can answer. I have been looking up records at the  Catholic Parish Registers at the nli. Are the records listed in the parshs , have they been cataloged and online at Find my past and others?  The reason why I ask is because while looking through   Micofilm on family serach I was able to discover my Great grandfathers will form 1825 in Kenton Kentucky.  If I searched for his name it never showed up on a search. I had to spend months going through will books at family search. I am hoping that I might find a treasure about my family, thats why I was wondering if they have been categorized and entered in to one of those sites. But if there is a chance to discover somethng I can look at Micofilm all day long. I found a lead about my Parrtridge family I will be posting a post asking for help. I found quite a few families and I need to see which one stayed and if one left.Plus putting brothers and sisters together with the right parents. I will list them as families then hopefully it will be easier to search .

Thank you for all you do so far no luck with DNA and my ancestors I haven't checked Living DNA in a while maybe something has been uploaded to my account.

Subscription sites like Roots Ireland, FindMyPast.ie and Ancestry all have the NLI records transcribed and available for searching. Roots Ireland has a few more records then the other two sites. As I mentioned in my first reply, I used Roots Ireland and FindMyPast.ie trying to find your Carroll ancestors.

don't know how many people have taken the Living DNA test but you likely have a smaller database and therefore fewer matches. There is a site called Gedmatch gedmatch.com where your can load your data and see if you have matches with people who have tested with other companies and also loaded their data to Gedmatch. I think you should also be able to load your data to MyHeritage and maybe Family Tree DNA for free but check out those sites. Finally, Ancestry has a hugh database and you may want to take their test.

  • Hi Roger,

Thank you for your reply. I am a member to all of the sites you have mentioned above as well as Geni, Wiki too! I found more records of partridge just looking through the films on NLI than I found on roots search! I do appreciate all the help . I will keep looking and posting hopefully something will come through and I will have found where in Irland my family came from.

    Blessing and thanks,

  • Jan,

Look up Simon - Sinon Carroll, Kildimo on www.findmypast.ie - 1859 to 1863. Entries relate to Kilrush, Co. Clare. There is Michael Carroll in the Voting Register for Kilrush 1861 at the same address  -  attached.

A Michael Carroll was a member of the British Army. On retirement he stated that his address would be in Manchester, England - attached.Regards,

  • Thank you,

I will start lookig into what you sent me. I appreciate it. Any information with Micheals wife Norah? I guess that would be the linch pin if we an find the Micheal Carroll with a wife Norah or their marriage certificate in the area, or a birth or baptism record with Micheal , Noarah and Simon, Sinon on it!  But it is the area where it iwas said he came from. The marriage record of Catherine and Sinon do we have what church that they were married in? I see its in the St Senans parish  but i did not see the church name, I thought maybe the chuch would have been the pale where Simon was baptised .

    Thank you and blessings

  • Jan,

The church where Simon and Catherine were married is in Kilrush town. The custom was that the bride married in her own parish. Scattery Island is in Kilrush parish.

In regard to Simon and his parents, the Kilkee records are from January 1869. We do not know where Norah McInerney was from, so hopefully some descendant may see your Post and respond.

Voters list for Moyarta - 1863 - record entry No. 83 for Michael Carroll - Objected. There is nothing to show why He may have moved away when Simon emigrated?

Land registery may have detail on who the property was passed on to.

A check on www.irishgenealy.ie did not show any death records for Michael and Norah. Civil records are from January 1st 1864. Many deaths were never recorded with the local Registrar.

  • McCoy,

This is very good news indeed!!I have reached out to the  Assistant Archivist  Archives of the Chancery of the Archdiocses of Cincinnati Ohio where Catherine Carroll/ Griffin was buried. I hope that maybe in their records her parents may have been recorded. It would be wonderful to know if her fathers name was Michael. I guess it would not be unusal for the parents to have the same name, it was a Irish nameing pattern correct, to name the son after the father. I wonder if that means Simon had a brother named Micheal. I will look at the church records and see if ther were siblings to Simon. Maybe that was the one who took over the land? Do you think the St. Senan's Church that is there today the same one that they could have been married. I will look through the films on nli. Maybe I will find some other Carrolls?

    St. Senan's

Diocese of Killaloe | County of Clare

    Variant forms of parish name:

    Kilrush

I have Simon and Catherine arriving in 1863 and if Micheal did move because of his son was leaving the country  and he did serve in the Military it would make sense to go to England. Maybe Norah passed and he wanted to move? It could be that he died in England! I will check death record for that area that it says he moved too in Manchester.

If you look at the death certificate Norah's last name also looks like McNanny or McNerrey so I am really not sure what herlast name was. But Norah seemed like such a rare name in Ireland .  I wonder if is Mary Norah or something else with the Norah. But we know she has to be from the area , correct? If Micheal and Norah married it would been around 1820 ish depending on  the birth order of the other sons, he would of married someone local not someone from across the Island, or not. I am not familier with 1800 travel in Ireand.

I stared looking into the Scattery Island, I came across this :

In 1842, after the salvaging the Windsor Castle, Inis Cathaigh was home to Shannon Estuary Pilots and their families. The primary families of the island were the Brennan, Melican, Scanlan, McMahon, Costelloe, Hehir, Moran, and Griffin. The river pilots were highly skilled mariners, using only native currachs (canvas boats) to reach incoming and outgoing ships

Notice the family name Griffin! I wonder if her parents are buried on the Island!! How exciting!! Thank you! So much I am feeling  like this could be my grandfather!! AND our tour goes right through Kilrush ! We are going to look into stopping there and then meet up with the tour down in Killarney , but my husband wants to make sure that it is the place.

    THANK YOU!!!

  • Jan,

The surname "Carroll" was fairly prominent in West County Clare in the 1800's. I do not see any connection between Michael Carroll - Kildimo, Kilkee and Michael Carrroll who was in the military. There was another "Michael Carroll" in Moyasta, Kilkee. He was a "Boatman".

I attach a record of a Catherine Carroll who was baptised in Kilrush in October 1831. Her father is recorded as "John Carroll". No address recorded.

You might consider writing to the Editor of the local newspaper - clarechampion.ie  -  and request that he place a note on the paper.

In order to attract attention - assuming he agrees - you should head it - "Scattery Island - Kilrush".

  • Thank you! That is a wonderful idea, . So the british Miceal is a non starter, I did think it odd that his father would be British Military when Simon was a farmer. So Micheal Kilrush or Micheal Kilkee is where I need to start looking?

Another thing Simon and Catherine had a son John J Carroll born in 1862 So they had a baby and they lived in that area would they have baptized him in St Senans church where they were married? Or did they belong to another parish at this point . I am going to request his death certificate to make sure that he was born in Ireland. If he was than surely he would have been baptized before coming over. I am off to work I will look into this more over the weekend.

Thank you this is making my upcoming trip very exciting , We are making plans to stop and see St Senans church!

Do you think that John was a relative to Micheal?

Scattery Island was a close knit community and I believe that the answer to your Post lies in that Community.

In regards to the  baptism of John Carroll in 1862, the family are recorded in the townland of Kildeema, commonly known as "kildimo", which is in the parish of Kilkee. The records do not begin until December 1869 on the NLI.

    Best Wishes on Your trip,

I just went looking for John Carroll's birth date and I have a connection at the cementry where he is buried. I will email him next for the record BUT it says his birth date is April 1865.  I know Kilkee starts in 1869 But St Senan's start in 1865 ther ecould be a chance that he is there.  On the record I have of them sailing over it lists them arriving in Nov of 1863, John is listed as an infant he would of been a month old if born in Oct 1863. Also Simon and Catherine had a son Micheal born in Oct of 1866 says he was born in New Jersey. If they arrived in 1863 then Micheal is born 1866 , they must of stayed in New Jersey a bit. I wonder if I can find his naturalization records there. I have not found one in Ohio. The first record I have of him is the 1870 census, but if he was living for 7 years in New Jersey? Maybe I can find a record there?

    McCoy,

Hello, I came across a Inhabitants of Scattery Island, Shannon Estuary, Co. Clare by Senan Scanlan

8.5.1 Appendix I: Family Databases: Griffin Pedigree I have attached the chart

I see there is a Catherine who is the daughter of Michael and Mary Crotty
There were four children Sinan b 2-6-1845 ,Bridget b 1831 ,Honor ,and a Catherine I think this is my Catherine! Now I just have to prove it. I also came across a couple of Michael Carrolls which I will attach in a separate post , .I am looking for a connection between the two families and if the marriage certificate you sent over earlier is there marriage is my ancestors how did they meet and get married if Catherine was living on Scattery Island? The Carrolls were not . So It must of been the church or community meeting place. I am going to reach out to the author of the article Senan Scanlan . I hope he has an email and can help answer the these questions. So what do you think ?

  • McCoy,
attached is the Michael Carrolls I have dug up from Clare Co. I found the one Michael you mentioned from Moyarta, and a few more. The Simon I found is in
Carroll Simon Castlecrine Kilfinaghta Limerick. My geography of Ireland is not that great. SO I am trying to attach Carrolls with The area around Scattery Island.in 1855 there were 176 Griffin families

COPIES FROM CLARE GENEALOGY: Valuation for the parishes of Kilballyowen and Moyarta in the West Clare Barony of Moyarta lists an increase in the majority of these names, despite the famine, from the TAB's years (1823 to 1837) as the table below shows although the number of Hanrahans and McMahons declined. The figures in columns one to three have been extracted from files downloaded from www.clarelibrary.ie and those in four are taken from www.ireland.com/ancestor.

It is not possible to draw any definitive conclusions from the first two columns as these areas were devastated during the famine and the three former towns of Kilballyowen, Ross and Tullig were totally eliminated due to loss of population. However we could speculate that the salvage money received by these families, relatives of those that went to Scattery Island, may have helped to defray the worst effects of the famine in these areas as it did on the island. The total population of the island, including soldiers, increased by forty from 99 in 1851 to 139 in 1861[41] so we can assume that at the time of Griffith's Valuation in 1855 the population would have been close to one hundred and twenty.

Name Number in TAB's Number in Griffith's Total No in Griffith's for Clare(1855) Total No in Griffith's for Ireland (c1855)
    Griffins 21 34 176 1712

Do any of the areas in the Michael Carrol document attach match the area?
    Thank you!!!

  • Jan,

Griffith's Valuations - Michael Carroll - Kildeema - Parish of Kilfearagh (Kilkee)

Tithe Records - Michael Carroll & Sons - Kildimo -  Parish of Kilfearagh (Kilkee)

The Simon Carroll which you have marked lived in the parish of Sixmilebridge which is close to Limerick City.

Kildeema is approx. 4 miles from Kilrush town on the road to Kilkee - Mid way to Kilkee.

If you Google the name you will find it West of Poulnasheery Bay (Moyasta) and Emlagh townland.

I still think you should consider the Clare Champion. It will have a wide circulation.

    McCoy
