My GGGMother, Nancy McMaster, b.10may1839 in Ireland, emigrated to the United States in 1858. According to U.S. Census data, Nancy's parents were both born in Ireland.

Nancy McMaster met and married Thomas Jones,b.1836 in Ayrshire, Scotland, in Dixon, Illinois around 1861. Nancy may be related to a John McMaster who emigrated from County Tyrone also to Dixon, Illinois.

Nancy McMaster Jones died on 29may1904 and was buried in Dunlap, Iowa.

I am seeking general information on McMaster families in Ireland and specific info on Nancy McMaster.

Thank you.

  • Hi Joe

I searched on www.rootsireland.ie/ for Nancy McMaster born 1839 in all counties but got no matches

I then tried without her first name and got 5 matches: Ann in  Armagh Archibald & Joseph in Derry

The other 2 were Anne Master Cavan and Anne Maston Offaly

Could Nancy have been a nickname?

  • Col,

Thanks for your quick response and assistance.I don't know if Nancy is a nickname. The only name I know is Nancy. This is anecdotally from my mother and from Find A Grave data for her at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Dunlap, Iowa. She named her firstborn daughter Lillie J. and second born Mary Anna. The other girls names are Ellizabeth, Margaret, and Sarah.

There could be a problem with her birthdate. The 1880 Census lists her as 42 years old; making the birth year 1838. Then the 1900 Census lists her birth month and year as July 1836. My data for 10may1839 comes from the cemetery and again, anecdotally from family (bible entry?).

This is really exciting finding a firm connection to Ireland, as both US Census forms list her and her parents as Irish.

    Thanks again.

  • Col,

I was just thinking that the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Find A Grave data lists her maiden name as McMasters. I just googled McMasters and Ireland found some instances of the name. Thus, her maiden name could have been McMasters vice McMaster. However, our family hearsay recollections are McMaster.

Dixon, Illinois is a small town of about 15,000 people. There was a John and Sarah McMaster in Dixon in the late 1800s. Also, the former governor of the State of South Dakota, William Henry McMaster, from 1921-1925 returned to be a banker in Dixon and is buried there. There must be a strong connection between McMaster or McMasters and Dixon. John McMaster is purportedly from County Tyrone.

    Thanks again.
