I have been researching my father’s family the Murphy’s. England Census records indicate that my 1st and 2nd great grandparents were from Ireland. Most records indicate either ‘Cork, Ireland’ or simply ‘Ireland’. The 1911 England Census is the only record that indicates ‘Mallow, Ireland’.
My 2nd great grandparents are Daniel and Ellen Murphy. The only information I have found for Daniel and Ellen:
Daniel Murphy: 1881 England Census, born in Ireland in 1826. Died 1883 in Romford, Essex, UK, his Death Certificate indicates a birth year of 1838.
Ellen Murphy: 1881 England Census, born in Ireland in 1841; 1891 England Census, born in Ireland in 1851; 1901 England Census, born in Ireland in 1837; 1911 England Census, born in Mallow, Ireland in 1836. Died 1911 in Romford, Essex, UK, age 75.
My research indicates that Daniel and Ellen Murphy had 4 children. England Census records show that their first 3 children were born in Ireland. I do not know when they left Ireland for England. My 1st great grandfather was their 2nd child, Patrick Murphy. These 3 children were:
- Edward (Edmond?) Murphy; born between 1856 – 1862 in Cork, Ireland.
- Patrick Murphy (my 1st great grandfather); England Census records show births ranging between 1863 – 1876 in Cork, Ireland. Patrick Murphy married Honora O’Donnell in 1890 in Romford, Essex, UK and the Marriage Certificate indicates that Patrick was born in 1867. Patrick died 1918 in South Leyton, Essex, UK, his Death Certificate indicates a birth year of 1877.
- Johanna Murphy; born 1866 in North City, Cork, Ireland.
I do not have marriage information for Daniel and Ellen Murphy or any information on their parents.
I am hoping to find birth/baptism/marriage records for Daniel and Ellen Murphy. As well, the birth/baptism records for Patrick Murphy.
I feel that the mention of Mallow in the 1911 England Census for Ellen Murphy is an important next step in my quest for information on my Murphy family. As Ellen Murphy was born sometime between 1836 and 1851, I’m wondering if there are Mallow birth/baptism records available for those years. I would love to find out who Ellen’s parents are as well as their BMD and burial information.
On a trip to England in 1984, I met my grandfather’s sister. During this visit I discovered that upon my grandfather’s immigration to Canada in 1910 he changed is surname from Murphy to another more common name. My grandfather was born a Murphy, as a young child he was fostered by his uncle and aunt (Patrick and Eleanor O'Donnell) and took on the surname of O’Donnell for a while, and upon his arrival in Canada he chose to use another name. My grandfather passed away in 1969 never revealing any of his past with his children. I’m so grateful that I was able to connect with his sister to learn about our true Murphy family heritage. If anyone can help me discover my true Irish family, I would be truly grateful.
