Hi. Is anyone else researching this particular COUGHLIN family from Shanagolden ?
Parents: Daniel Coughlin - Catherine O'Connell
Known Children:
1834, Judith: No address, Shanagolden Parish
Sponsors: John and Maria Carter
1837, John: No address, Shanagolden Parish
Sponsors: Ml. Canty and Maria Flanagan
1839, Daniel: No address, Shanagolden Parish
Sponsors: John Batts and Maria Batts
1845, Joseph: No address, Shanagolden Parish
Sponsors: Ml. Connelly and Maria Walsh
I'm trying to find parents for two Coughlin brothers in Yonkers NY, who are a John and a Daniel. Father's name is correct but mother's name is not. Ages are "somewhat" correct.
Also, if you are reading this, and are a Coughlin descendant in general, and have done a DNA test, please let me know.
Please note that I have no further info on any other families in Shanagolden. I'm just on a fishing expedition.
Thanks.

Dear Nancy:

In addition, we have a very knowledgeable Shanagolden volunteer who I will copy this post to and she will reply to you with any information that she may have.
You might take a look at the civil parish page of Shanagolden and if you scroll down the page, you will note that a number of ancestor profiles have been added. Please feel free to add your ancestor profile there also.

Hi Nancy,
What are the names - John and Daniel? - and birth dates of the two Couglin brothers in Yonkers?
Are you trying to find living descendants?
I did find a bit of a reference for you in a book called, Every Field Had a Name by Gerard Curtin, a local Ballyhahill author. On Pg.75 he says that in the place called Finoo the area near the Mt. Trenchard Estate (around the GAA field) seems to have been called Knockarecoghlan, and that a number of Coughlin families lived there betwen 1823 and 1852. Gerard states that "Knockarcoghlan" may mean "the small hill of the Coughlins."
There is a book called West Limerick Families Abroad by Valerie Thompson and Kate Press. The book is out of print now, and both Kate and Valerie are deceased but you may be able to purchase a copy from Tony Press, Kate's husband. There is a website: http://home.alphalink.com.au/~datatree/westlim-1.htm There is a LOT of info about Daniel and Catherine and their children in this book. It seems much of the family emigrated to Australia. The family DID live in Finoo, near Ballyhahill. Daniel and Catherine married cir 1833 and both died after 1855. Under Remittance Regulations of 1853. Michael Coughlin - Daniel's brother - of Campbelltown, NSW helped four of Daniel's children to emigrate to Australia. He was the uncle of the children and he sent 5£ EACH to help with their expenses. Michael had emigrated through employment in 1822. The four Coughlin kids - Michael b 1824; Johanna b 1836; John b 1838 and Daniel b 1840 - arrived in 1855 on the Matoaka. There is more - names of spouses, etc. - but it's far too much to retype. The ISBN for the book is: 0-646-41334-1 It was printed in 2001 in Australia by Kate Press. She was an amazing woman!
There is another book, Poverty to Promise: the Monteagle Emigrants 1818-58 by Christpher O'Mahoney. There is a notation that Johanna Coughlin b 1836, dau of Daniel and Catherine married John Devine, a widower from Co Tyrone (son of John and Ann) living in Boorowa, NSW on 7 Apr 1861.
Best of luck in your search,
