My name is Vincent Francis Shannon. My grandfather was Francis Phillip Shannon born in 1893 in South Australia. His father's name was Thomas Shannon and his father was Patrick Shannon. My grandfather had a brother named William David Shannon and a sister named Dorothy May Shannon. That's about as much information I have. Can anybody help me determine the origin of my family?

  • Hi Vincent,

This information might help us a bit further

    Australia Birth Index, 1788-1922

    Name: Francis Phillip Shannon
    Birth Date: 28 Nov 1893
    Father's Name: Thomas Shannon
    Mother's Name: Louisa Grimm
    Birth Place: Kensington Park
    Registration Place: Norwood, South Australia

    ame: Dorothy May Shannon
    Birth Date: 23 Mar 1896
    Father's Name: Thomas Shannon
    Mother's Name: Louisa Grimm
    Birth Place: Kensington Park
    Registration Place: Norwood, South Australia

    Name: William David Shannon
    Birth Date: 12 Jul 1888
    Father's Name: Thomas Shannon
    Mother's Name: Louisa Grimm
    Birth Place: Kensington Park
    Registration Place: Norwood, South Australia

From this we can say that Thomas was already married and in Australia in 1888,

Louisa was Louisa Bertha Grimm born 8 June 1863, she died 8 Feb 1926

Thomas Shannon was born around 1860 I reckon and died 8 August 1938

Their marriage took place in Australia

There seem to be two more brothers , Thomas Patrick Shannon born 13 Feb 1887 in Kensington Park, South Australia  and Clarence Ernest ignatius Shannon born 2 Feb 1901 in  Kensington Park, South Australia

Unfortunately the marriage record does not state where Thomas was born , it is possible that even his father Patrick Shannon was already born in Australia.

    Name: Louisa Grimm
    Father's Name: Ernest Grimm
    Spouse Name: Thomas Shannon
    Spouse's Father's Name: Patrick Shannon
    Marriage Date: 18 Jan 1886
    Marriage Place: Norwood
    Registration Place: Norwood, South Australia

I will have a look trough the emigration and passenger lists and baptisms in Ireland and see can I find a match for Patrick Shannon

    Regards.

  • Hello,

Wow. Thanks for all that information. I really appreciate the effort. It confirms what I know. I am finding it relatively easy to trace the Grimms and the Smiths (my grandfather married Irene Emily Smith) but the Shannons have been hard to trace because I cannot find any records directly relating to my Patrick Shannon in Australia. There are countless Patrick Shannon's in various records but it is hard to determine if any of them are the father of my great. great grandfather. For instance, other than the Patrick you have mentioned there was also a Patrick who arrived in Adelaide (my home city) in October 1858 on a ship called The Bee which sailed from Liverpool on July 2nd. I will see what Australian records are available for the Patrick you have mentioned. Thanks again for your wonderful help.

    Kind regards,

    Vincent

  • Hi Vincent,

My name is Rebecca Corcoran and Francis Phillip Shannon is my Great Great Grandfather. My Great Grandmother was Gwendolin May Fitzgerald (nee Shannon). Francis also had an older brother, Thomas Patrick Shannon (named from his father) who was killed near Pozieres on the Somme battlefields in France on the 16th August 1916. My interest in family history began when I visited Thomas' grave in 2005. I have also discovered that Francis enlisted in the war in 1917 under 'Frank' Phillip Shannon. I too found it fairly easy to trace the Baum/Grimm branch of the family, but I would be interested to know if you have discovered anything else about Patrick Shannon.

    Regards

    Rebecca

  • I  had 2 Grand Uncles who were studying for the priesthood in Maynooth Ireland ,one announced to his family that he could not continue , his mother felt betrayed & both brothers emigrated late 1800 .... I think , Patrick returned in the early 1900 to say his Good byes to his sick mother , he travelled with 2 of his children . Once they returned, Again ... there was no more contact .

We understand one of the brothers was a soldier for the Australian government in the early 1900 , I happen to have a picture of him in uniform , ( also another pic. of a couple with 2 children .) Recently I have discovered a family living in the north east of Australia , who are our relatives, although a sister is living in the USA , I know little more about them .

A son of one of the emigrants visited Elphin , Roscommon , Ireland appx 1964 , Unfortunately his grand Aunt he visited suffered with Dementia, & told him she had nobody in her family with such names . Sadly when my Dad discovered the gentleman had left the hotel for the airport & we had no means of seeing him . We seem to think that this man lived or worked in Sydney , & May have been a lawyer .

Our Shannon family were relocated from Clare , west Ireland, during the Cromwell days , & have lived in our village since appx .1648 . Cromwell’s soldiers made 3 or 4 of the brothers homeless as they were classified as foreigners , the Irish Parliament rehoused them .

Does this information mean anything to another Shannon out there . I would love to hear from you . Una.
