I have references in official records of Snugborough Co. Kilkenny. I cannot locate this Snugborough on current maps. Would appreciate assistance in locating.

Many thanks in advance!

If I counted correctly, there are 13 townlands across Ireland called Snugborough just not in Co. Kilkenny.

I saw a reference to Snugborough in the 1833 Tithe records for Kilmaganny civil parish in Co. Kilkenny . William Reade was the land holder. I was hoping to look at the 1850 Griffiths head of household listing for Kilmaganny parish and make a connection but William Reade had ten different properties in the parish in various townlands in the parish. So there is no way to make a connection.

You mention seeing official records with Snugborough, was that the Tithe listing?

I have aRegistry of Deeds Memorial 200424 shows a John Sheppard residence of Snugborough KIK in 1770.  Also a Sources.nli record of a 1789 Marriage Settlement involving George Sheppard of Snugborough Co. Kilkenny. George was John Sheppard's son.  Finally, a copy of Landed Gentry reports for the Thomas Sheppard family  (Co. Tipperary) that the second marriage of John Sheppard above was with an Anne Read of Snugborough Co. Kilkenny and daughter of George Read.  I'm wondering now if this Read property is part of the William Reade property that you referenced.  Apart from your reference, these are three seemingly independent references to a Snugborough Co. Kilkenny that I can't find.
Thank you for your timely response

I am from the USA and still learning Ireland's demographic structure so I'm uncertain about the relationship between a parish and a town or town land. However, following my comment above I looked up Kilmaganny Co. Kilkenny and find the town  is near the Kilkenny/Tipperary county line.   The Thomas Sheppard families have roots in S Co. Tipperary and "Castle John" near the county line is a family holding of the 17th and18th centuries. Rev Thomas Sheppard, son of John Sheppard in my response above, lived in Newpark Co. Kilkenny in th last 1700s. Newpark is just west of Kilmaganny.

My wife and I will be in Ireland next April and will be trying to locate some of these  Sheppard areas.  Thanks so much for your help.

The Church of Ireland baptismal records for Kilmoganny (spelling provided) Church of Ireland parish are included on the subscription site Roots Ireland. The baptismal records go back to 1807. No Sheppard records but one record for a daughter of William Reade. No location provided.

Louise Reade February 19 1832 father William Reade mother Elizabeth (no last name provided)'

I looked again at the Tithe listings http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004587462/00… and the townland after Snugborough was Kyle which is 1.7 miles northeast of Kilmaganny village  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilmoganny    so likely Snugborough would be in that direction.

I really can't thank you enough for the information provided. Anne Read mentioned above, daughter of George Read, married John  Sheppard in 1756, we'll in advance of the Reade records you've found. Nevertheless it's the best information I have to date.  I may go back to the Registry of Deeds and see if I can find the Reades there.

The person and residence I seek the most is Rev Thomas Sheppard--oldest son of John Sheppard and Hannah Dawson Sheppard. A Registryof Deeds stated his residence at Newpark Co. Kilkenny, but that in 1777 he leased Brookhill, Middle Third Barony, Co. Tipperary.  A church of Ireland document says a Rev ThomasSheppard was Rector of the Kilvemnon church in 1771. Other documents state he married Hannah Dawson in 1770. These are also the Sheppards of Castle John Co. Tipperary.  I particularly would like to find his specific residences and cemetery of his burial. An index of Perogative Wills showed a Rev Thomas Sheppard, Waterford City Clerk, listed at 1804.

    Thanks for all your attention!

So pleased to see your note! Yes I believe I'm from the "Castle John" Sheppards. My paper trail is not complete, but with records and DNA studies I have confidence of being one of the Castle John Sheppards.
I’m from the States (Kentucky) and please pardon my lack of understanding of your organizations, but please explain “Middlethird.” Is that the mid section of Co. Tipperary? In 2018 my wife and I drove Ireland for three weeks and loved every moment. Country is beautiful and everyone we met were wonderful to us. We are coming back next April and have rented a cottage in S Tipperary to try to find out more about our Sheppards. I am very interested in Rev Thomas Sheppard and his family and would love to see your family tree and any other Sheppard information that you have. I don’t want to be too forward, but my wife and I would love to see you and your family in April if we could arrange it.

    Best wishes!

  • Hi John,

Great to hear back from you. It would be great to meet you in April. My sister Catherine and I are doing family research for years. How far back can you go on the Sheppard line. Have you done a DNA test either on My Heritage or ancestry. I only found this site by chance a few months ago. Would it be better to continue this conversation by email.
