My husband's cousin was born 28 Mar 1912. The civil record shows Elizabeth O'Donnell was born in "Sollogheadly".  It's hard to read the handwriting, but that's what it looks like.  Any idea where that might be located?  Could it be in the Tipperary Town area?  Her mother, Alice White, had family in the Anacarty area and father had some family in Tipperay Town.

  • Hi,

    It's Solohead, County Tipperary.
    Nearest Registration district is Tipperary TOWN.      The address is Soloheadbeg  (this looks like Soloheadly.)  Soloheadbeg, is to the right of Solohead.

  • Thank you, Margot.  I had never seen this name before I found this birth record.  Some of the family lived in Tipperary Town and some lived in Anacarty/Donohill so this seems to be very close to those family members.

  • I have used this site quite often. In fact, this is where I found the birth record for Elizabeth.  I had never come across the name Soloheadly on any other records so I was curious about its location. This site does have some great records. Thanks.

  • Hi Peg / Margot, it is actually a famous name in Irish history and credited where the War of Independence started, there are conflicting accounts of what occurred but here is an article from the Irish TImes on the 100th anniversary. https://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/soloheadbeg-ambush-w…;

  • Pat and Peg,
    Thanks for the link.
    Have you read...this is the code.    This place is not far from where I lived. When I saw the article in the local newspaper years ago (2006) I had to get a copy.

  • Solohead, Anacarty, Donohill are all neighbours as can be seen on the National Library of Ireland website showing the neighbouring parishes. The population here seems to have been quite fluid between these places as it was flatter then the hills/ mountains to the north.

    The Solohead Ambush is also recorded in the Bureau of Military Archives (free to research). Many veterans had to publish accounts of their activities in order to claim military pensions in the new Free Ireland. Although the incident did not start the war of Independence in itself tha fact it was one of the first and most publicised events, outside of the capital was a pivotal moment. The English parliament reviewing the Irish situation realised that if the problem continued to spread into rural areas it would be impossible post-WW1 to provide opposition? Remember five empires fought the war. 4 were left destoyed and the British Empire severely crippled financially, unable to oppose the growing opposition. Sorry this is slightly off topic but relevant to the area northof here was a hotbed of dissent and provided many of the key characters such as Daniel Breen. Where Tipperary leads, Ireland follows - so the saying goes? :)
