I'm searching for more details on Stephen W. Carney (Born ABT 1733, Cork). and his lineage.

He immigrated to the USA and had a son named Stephen Carney Jr. Stephen SR was married to Mary Belcher in the USA.

The parents of Stephen SR (I believe) are:

Solomon Carney (Born ABT 1713, Cork) and wife Mary Elizabeth McCullough (born ABT 1713 - died ABT 1752)

The grandparents of Stephen SR (I believe) are:

Thomas Wilson Carney (Born ABT 1682) and Sarah Jane Mayo (born ABT 1679).

I believe Thomas and Sarah are from Mayo County. Thomas may have been a weaver.

I truly appreciate any help that can be provided.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Unfortunately, given the information you have provided it may be hard to find more inforamtion other than what you already know. When doing genealogy research in Ireland it is important to have a specific location of origin, preferably a parish name. Most Irish record sources- church records, land records, census records- are based on specific locations. Until you know a specific location within Ireland, preferably a parish or placename, it may be difficult to do anything more with these records. Do you have any documentation pertaining to the family that mentions anything more specific than Cork and Mayo? If you can find a townland/village/town name even, it will help you find out what parish they lived in.

Also, the reality of finding documentation pertaining to births/baptisms/marriages/deaths in Ireland prior to 1800 ? particularly in rural areas ? is that they simply may not exist.  Some registers for urban areas pre-dating 1800 may exist ? though often these can be fragmented- as there was an increased need in cities or larger towns to document the population. If Stephen was from Cork city you may be in luck. Please also note that the Church of Ireland was the official church of the country and therefore the bulk of information that does survive for earlier periods is often from these registers.

If you would like more information on Church of Ireland registers go to http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/

Perhaps you could also try getting in contact with the county libraries for possible assistance or advice.
