Our great grandparents, Joseph Stewart and Jane Montgomery, were born and married in County Monaghan. Joseph was from Cornawall, and Jane from Tullycaghney. They were married in McKelvey's grove meeting house in 1876. My sisters and I are planning to visit the area for 2 weeks at the end of May, 2019 and would appreciate any assistance in finding local records or descendants of this family. Joseph's parents were James Stewart and Eliza Madill. They were married on June 24, 1845 in Cootehill Registrar's office. James's fathers name was Thomas Stewart. They were residents of Cornawall, Parish of Aghabog. Eliza was resident of Kilmore, Parish of Ematris. Jane Montgomery was from Tullycaghney. Her father was James Montgomery who married Margaret Isabella Niblock on March 28, 1853 at the First Clontibret Presbyterian Church. James's parents were James Montgomery and Anne Short of Cashel.

  • Dear Stewart Montgomery:

    Thank you for your post to the message board and the attachments.  I have been in contact with a local librarian in Monaghan about your upcoming trip and some assistance with research.  I should hear from her in the next few days.  When I do, I will post the information on this thread.  Please keep us posted about your travel plans and if there is anything further that we can do, pease let us know.

    Kind regards,

     Jane

  • Hi there.

    I haven't seen a reply to this post from January.

    Our trip is coming up shortly and we are very excited. We (myself and my 2 sisters (Brenda and Constance) will be arriving in Ireland between May 13 and 28th. Beginning May 28th we will be staying in Emyvale, Monaghan to do genealogy research. I wonder if there has been any more information anyone can share to help us in our research while we are there! We are planning to visit the Clones Library and many, many churches and cemeteries but if anyone has anything else that would be great.

    Hi Warren;

    Wonderful to hear from you! We had a fabulous trip (I went over twice in the same year), and am looking to go again either this year or 2024 to do some more research. I am intrigued by the fact that you live beside where Jane lived. Where is that exactly and do you have any pictures? Do you mean the old farmhouse in Cashel? I have attached a picture of my sister and I with the couple from Ireland who showed us the Montgomery farmhouse in Cashel. Would you care to share the names of your father, and grandfather, so I can trace the line. We are also trying to research a Susan Montgomery, from the same area, born in 1875, who married a Willliam Smyth in 1895 and lived all their lives in Lisceenan townland, Castleblayney. Have you come across them?
