Hello, on my way to Mallow in August to find my Ancestry.  Looking for Breen and Galvin heritage.  Hoping to find more about my great-grandmother Susan Breen, daughter of William Breen.  Susan was born in 1847 in Mallow I believe, she married John Galvin and the moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

  • Hi Meg,

I've been to Ireland over thirty times.  I know you will need to have a lot more information than you have now in order to find/visit your ancestral places.  If you go to Ireland knowing only what you know now, I doubt anyone can help you.  Breen, for instance, may be Brien/O'Brien in Irish birth/marriage records--and there's a plethora of those names, too many for someone to determine who your Susan was.  "Probably Mallow" won't help either.  You need to determine the place before you go abroad.

The general advice is to start with yourself and search backward in U.S. records, such as census, birth, death, marriage, cemetery records, headstones, obituaries, probate records.  The American records may reveal a lot of helpful information about your ancestors so that you can identify the correct ones and the correct places before you go to Ireland.

If you can't do this yourself, you might consider consulting a professional genealogist. In the U.S., there's the Association of Professional Genealogists (www.apgen.org).

I hope this is helpful and that you have a wonderful trip.
