I am trying to find information on my gg Grandmother Mary Sweeney. I only have information from hers and her mothers death certificates. Mary was born around 1836 and came from Bourne (I have been unable to find a place called Bourne), County Clare. She emmigrated to Australia around 1858 (I have been unable to find the shipping records for her arrival). Her parents were John Sweeney and Mary McCarthy. Her mother also emmigrated to Australia in 1858 (I'm assumig they came together) and died in 1873 in Darlinhurst, NSW. Mary married Philip Ronan in Sydney in 1862, they had 9 children - Mary Maria, John Joseph, Patrick, Thomas, Margaret, Charles, Annie, Elizabeth Agnes and Philip (also known as Joseph). She had 1 sister and 1 brother (I don't know there names, ages or if they emmigrated to Australia).

    Hi Anita,

The location is the Burren - A rocky area in North County Clare.

In relation to John Sweeney, there is a John Sweeney in the townland of Doonagore, Civil Parish of Killilagh in Griffith's Valuation taken c1850. He is a tennant and is joined with James Moloney in farming the land. His house and other land is in the same townland.

There is a Michael McCarthy in the townland of Ballysallagh which is also in the parish of Killilagh.

There is a family of "Sweeney's" recorded in the 1901 census in Doonagore.

I have checked for a birth record for  "Mary Sweeney", but did not find any.  Nothing for John Sweeney and Mary McCarthy.

I recommend that you check out the Genealogy Section of Clare County Library - www.clarelibrary.ie for further records in relation to the Burren area.
