Hi, I am trying to find if any Tarpy’s are still in Ireland. I was there in 2016 and when I rented a car in Dublin the lady said she knew a Tarpy that lived outside of Dublin. I’m hoping to be back in Ireland this October. I have been trying to find out if there are any relatives still there. I would really like to find out and maybe meet up with them when I come back over

My name is Robert Tarpy.  Family was from Roscommon. Thank you for any information anybody can help me with.

I took a glance at the online Irish phone book (which only covers land lines) and Tarpey is much more common than Tarpy. The surname is mostly found in Galway and Dublin but there are Tarpeys in Roscommon, Mayo and Sligo.

Can you identify your Tarpey ancestor that left Ireland and when he left? Also his age? Maybe we can find out more info on your family in Roscommon.

The other question is whether you have taken a DNA test. I don't recommend the Y- test which tracks your pure paternal Tarpey line but rather a more general test that is available thru Ancestry and other companies. You may get some close matches on your Tarpey line

I gather from your note that Patrick Tarpey born 1820 was the ancestor who left Ireland.

As background, many RC parishes do not have records back to 1820.

I did search the subscription site Roots Ireland. There was a baptismal record on October 10 1818 for a Patrick Tarpy father William Tarpy and mother Anne Tarpy. There was a note under the mother's surname showing Lennox? so possibly that is her maiden name. The RC parish was Loughlynn and the family lived in Moyne townland.

This record would be a lead but you need other confirming information.

Let me know if John Tarpey was the one who emigrated from Ireland.

  • Hi, thank you for your help.  From what I have learned. Patrick emigrated to the United States to Pennsylvania.married Catherine( don’t know her last name) . John was born in Pennsylvania 3/5/1842 . I don’t know how old Patrick was or when he arrived in the United States. I don’t know if he had any siblings. Thank you so much,
