My goal is to try and verify or eliminate that Johanna Dillane born 23 June 1881 in Abbeyfeale Newcastle, townland Meenoline to Edmond Dillane and Eliza Finigan is my great grandmother Anne Manning nee Dillane.  Anything else you can find that helps.

All locations County Limerick.  I might have a breakthrough with my great grandmother Anne/Hanorah Manning nee Dillane, mother of my maternal grandfather William Manning 1905-1983.  My mother and Karen Wall DNA matched as second cousins once removed.  I believe making Karen and I third cousins, same great great grandparents.  I reached out to Karen and she filled me in on her Dillane connections.  With this new found information I went looking for the paper trail for our connections.

My great grandmother Anne Dillane used both Anne and Hanora(h) on records after marriage.  All records I have for her are Civil.  RC Church of Shanagolden and other church records this recent are not available on NLI, so I don’t have the clues baptism sponsors might provide.  Her records after marriage are from District Shanagolden, Union Rathkeale and residence Ballyan(e).  Anne Dillane married Patrick Manning 30 Nov 1899 at RC Shanagolden.  From marriage registration Anne's father's name was Edward, a labourer.  The witnesses were Mary Dillane and Daniel Trehy.  Anne's occupation was servant and her residence was written as Waterpark Shanagolden.  The only place named Waterpark near Shanagolden and Ballyane I could find was “Waterpark House” in Shanid.  Anne died 6 Feb 1933.  Possible birth years from census and death record I found for Anne were 1875, 1871, and 1877.  Anne’s children in sequence were John, Mary, Joseph, Edward, William, Johanna, Nora, Ellen, Patt, and Kate.  Joseph and Edward were grandfathers’ names.

Information from the DNA match Karen.  Her grandfather was Michael Wall born 1908 in Newcastle.  His parents were Patrick Wall and Mary Dillane, Mary was born in Templeglantine around 1884.  Patrick and Mary had a daughter named Mary born in Shanagolden.  Mary’s parents were Edmond Dillane and Elizabeth.

I found a Mary Dillane born 8 May 1884 District Abbeyfeale, Union Newcastle.  POB Meenoline.  Parents Edmond Dillane and Eliza Finigan.  Mary Dillane and Patrick Wall marriage District Shanagolden, Union Rathkeale.  They were married 3 Nov 1906 at RC Kilcolman. Mary's father Edmond, labourer.  Her residence was Moneymohil.   Patrick's father was Michael Wall.  Patrick’s residence was identified as Waterpark Shanagolden.  Patrick and Mary first child also named Mary, birth was 28 May 1907 in District Shanagolden, Union Rathkeale.  POB Briscaugh which neighbors Ballyane.  I thought curious that Patrick profession identified as “Pensioner”.  Birth records for remaining children were registered in Newcastle, POB Rathina with Patrick’s profession labourer. Their children in sequence were Mary, Michael, Johanna, Hanora, James, Edward, and Ellen.  1911 Census living in Newcastle Urban, Townland Rathnaneane.  James Dillane, 27, brother-in-law, agricultural labourer in same household.

Possible great great grandparents Edmond/Edward and Elizabeth Finigan.  Found marriage 9 March 1879 Abbeyfeale, Newcastle, RC Tournafulla.  Edmond Dillane, farmer, Templeglantine, father James, Labourer.  Elizabeth Finigan, 21, Seeconglas, father Denis Finigan, farmer.  Witnesses James O’Donnell and Nellie Finigan.  Found birth registration in Abbeyfeale, Newcastle townland Meenoline for children James (1880-1889), Johanna (1881), Ellen, Mary (1884), Mathew, Edmond, James, Honora, Denis, and Mathew.  1901 and 1911 Census in Templeglantan, Newcastle West, Meenyline North.  Johanna and Mary are not in household.  Curious on Census father Edmond is documented as farmer, but on birth registrations labourer.

Other information found.   1) One of the witnesses at grand uncle John Manning and Margaret Kelly's 28 Apr 1925 marriage at RC Templeglantine was Michael Wall the other was Mary Murphy.  2) the informant for James Dillane 1880-1889 death was Mary Murphy, aunt.  3) 1901 and 1911 Census Dillane family in Shanagolden Town head named James, possible brother of Edmond?  Also, a Wall family in Shanagolden Town.  I have not done deep research if connected.

I have a tree on Ancestry

One quick note. Roots Ireland does have transcriptions of Shanagolden baptismal records up to 1922. The 1881 baptismal record for Johanna Dillane shows sponsors Timothy and Maria Dunworth. There are nine baptismal records for children of Edmond Dillane and Elizabeth Finigan/Finnegan.

  • Bill,

A search of the 1901 Irish census shows Johanna Manning, husband, children, and her mother, Mary Dillane.  Of great interest is that Mary and Johanna are said to have been born in Co. Kerry.  I'll paste link in the next post.

  • The Johannah in the 1901 census who was born in Kerry was not married to Patrick, so if you are sure about the name Patrick, this was the wrong person. Sorry if I misled you!

  • Patricia, thanks for trying.  I searched a lot for Hanora and multiple variations and Anne with father Edmond and variations born between 1865 and 1880 in Limerick and Kerry.  Also had the clue that Mary Dillane was a witness at the wedding.  What led me to this Johanna born near Templantine, Limerick in 1881, who was likely outside my search parameters due to name and age (would be 18 at 1899 marriage) was the close DNA match, third cousin to a descendent of Mary Wall nee Dillane.

  • Roger thank you for the information regarding Shanagolden RC records on roots ireland.  Which church did you find the Johanna's and the other Dillane baptism records at?  By the way I did find 10 civil records for children of Edmond and Eliza and 1911 census reflects 10 children with 8 living.

  • Thanks for the feedback and here is an update.  I splurged for 30 days of roots Ireland to try and find additional clues.  I feel I pretty much confirmed that my great grandmother Anne (Hanora) Manning nee Dillane and Mary Wall nee Dillane were sisters and that I was going down the wrong trail with their parents.

For Anne (Hanora) Dillane.  Mary Dillane was not just a witness at Anne’s wedding to Patrick Manning, but also the sponsor for two of Anne’s children’s baptisms.  Other baptism sponsors were James Dillane and Joanna Dillane.  As were Mary’s future husband Patrick Wall, Anna Wall, Michael Wall, and Hanna Wall.

More useful lead from Mary Dillane.  Her marriage to Patrick Wall 1906 at RC Kilcolman had a NOTE in the transcription.  “BRIDES PARENTS ADDRESS – NEWCASTLE”.  Finally, a direction to look for Anne and Mary’s parents and possible home area.  Mary Wall and family moved from the Shanagolden area to Newcastle in 1907-1908 after her first child.  Their children’s births registered in Newcastle in Rathina (Rathnaneane) or Cloonyscrehane townlands.

In the 1911 Census the Wall family is living at house 7 in Rathnaneane, Newcastle Urban, Limerick.  James Dillane, brother-in-law is living in the household.  In the 1901 Census I discovered Edward, 60 and Johannah Dillane, 50 living at house 2 in Rathnaneane, Newcastle Urban, Limerick.  Now on a new trail I found the 4 March 1910 death registration of Edward Dillane, 75, widower in Newcastle, townland Rathina.  Informant was Mary Wall, daughter.  Seems Johannah died between 1901 census and 1910.  I have not found her death registration yet.

Opening up my search again for Anne and Mary Dillane’s (and a brother James) parents to include a mother named Johanna.  I already found one to research more, Edward Dillane and Johanna Gibbon/Fitzgibbon.  I have not found their marriage yet or a birth for Hanora (Anne), but I have found four children including a Mary and a James whose births were registered in Broadford Newcastle.  Their birth years are a few years earlier putting them more in line with what I thought they should be.

The four children I found thus far.  1) Johanna birth 4 Jul 1871, parents Edmond Dillane and Johanna Gibbons.  Interestingly Johanna baptism date is 14 May 1871.  Sponsors Jas. Gibbon and Maria Shaughnessy.  2) John birth 17 Aug 1875, parents Ned Dillane and Johanna Gibbons.  Haven’t found baptism.  3) Mary birth 18 May 1878, parents Edmond Dillane and Johanna Gibbon.  Mary baptism 26 May 1878.  Sponsors John McAuliffe and Eliz. McAuliffe.  4) James birth 20 May 1883, parents Edward Dillane and Johanna Gibbon.  James baptism 16 Apr 1883, parents Edmd. Dillane and mother identified as Johanna Fitzgibbon.  Sponsors Wm. Coughlan and Brigt. Quinn.

Hopefully on the correct path now to find my great grandmother's birth and accurately identify my great great grandparents.
