Wanting to find out more about the Teskey/Doherty/Keays families of Rathkeale Co. Limerick.

FRANCES TESKEY (bapt. 19 Dec 1801 Rathkeale Co. Limerick. Father: Jacob Teskey b.14 Sept 1746  Mother: Catherine Ruttle b.1760?) Frances married JOHN DOHERTY (b. 1787 Rathkeale) on Jan 15 1823 in Rathkeale.

They had a son ROBERT CHARLES DOHERTY b.1826  Rathkeale. Robert married ISABELLA KEAYS (KEYS) on Dec 6 1866 in Mungret, Limerick. Robert was a Colour Sargeant who died around 1873.  I do not know where or how.

His wife Isabella died a couple of years later ? In Coleraine, Northern Ireland ?  Robert and Isabella  had 4 children I believe, including MARY DOHERTY (aka 'Minnie') b.1866, who emigrated to Australia in 1876 as sponsored orphans.

I have scant information on the Teskey family (Palatine Community) and know virtually nothing about the Doherty and Keays families. Any further information would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!

  • There is 1 death in Coleraine that fits the information you have given for Isabella. Died 16.1.1876 aged 36. That year’s death certificates are not viewable free yet. You can view the original certificates on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

I see a death in Limerick in 1873 for a Robert aged 46. 3rd Quarter, Volume 15, page 285. You can order a research copy (photocopy) of the civil certificate from GRO Roscommon for €4 (euros). https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

You can e-mail your order to them and they will e-mail the certificate back to you.

I see 4 children to those parents, all at Strand Barracks, Limerick:

    Mary 6.6.1866

    Charles Albert Doherty 20.2.1852

    Philip 20.3.1871

    Edward 3.4.1872

Robert appears to have been in the Limerick Militia. (A local defence force). You can view those birth certificates free on this site:

I looked in the 1901 Irish census for Teskey. Not a common name. Found a lot in Co. Limerick and a few in Dublin. Mostly Church of Ireland (ie Anglican) or Methodist (though in the 1800s and before, the Methodists would have been Church of Ireland). Assuming Isabella was born Church of Ireland, Rathkeale Church of Ireland records are in the RCB Library in Dublin. However they apparently only start in 1837. However on rootsireland I found the marriage for James Doherty and Frances Teskey in the Church of Ireland in 1823. His address was Adare and hers Killeheen. I did not see Isabella's baptism in those records.

I note that there was still a Teskey family farming in Killeheen in in 1901:

  • Hi  Elwyn

Thank you so much for those details and for replying so quickly.

I do believe Mary (Minnie) also had an older brother, Robert Doherty, who emigrated to Australia in 1876. Was he not listed amongst the other children at Strand Barracks ?

    Many thanks for your assistance

  • I had a good look through the births in Limerick between 1866 and 1876 but did not find Robert’s birth there.

  • Hi Elwyn

Sorry,  I should have mentioned that Robert  was listed as being aged 13 when he emigrated to Australia in 1876.

This would mean he was born around 1862/1863 - which was before Robert Charles Doherty and Isabella Keays married.

I am wondering whether Robert (jnr) had a different mother.

Could Robert Charles Doherty have been married previously? He was 40 when he married Isabella.

You have also listed the birth year of Albert Charles Doherty as 1852, which makes me also wonder who's child Albert was.

Bit of a mystery! Can you help?

    Thanks Aussie Doherty

  • Hi,
This is from the Tithe records, see the link..............the 1827 has 2 entries, on is a full page the other a zoomed in page.
The 1825 is an earlier record. Note the townland name Courtmantriss, see below link now known as Courtmantrix.

This is Tax/rent value of lands.

  • Charles Albert’s date of birth was 20.32.1869. Sorry I gave the wrong year on my earlier post.

Robert Doherty is recorded as a bachelor on the 1866 marriage certificate, so that indicates he had not been married before. (Neither had Isabella).

Statutory birth registration only started in Ireland in 1864 so if Robert jr was born before that, then he won’t have a birth certificate. Pre 1864 we rely on church records. There is a baptism for a Robert Charles Doherty on 13.1.1861 (date of birth 30.12.1860) in St John’s parish, Limerick. Church of Ireland. The father is Robert Doherty, tradesman. The mother is Isabella (no surname).  That looks likely to be your Robert.
