Looking to locate where my husbands GG Grandparents came from in Ireland.  We will be visting in August and I was hoping to surprise my MIL with a trip to her family's place or origin.

I know Thomas Costello, b. circa 1825 in Ireland, d. May 1898 Spruce Hill MN.  He was married to Mary b. circa 1827 in Ireland, d. Nov 1897 Spruce Hill MN.  I believe her last name MAY have been McDermott.

I have found the family in US Census records in 1855 Franklin, Norfolk, MA, 1860 and 1870 St. Anthony, MN, 1875, 1880 and 1895 Spruce Hill, MN.

According to his obit "Mr. Costello was a native of Ireland and was about 73 years old. He lived several years in London where he was a police officer and where he was married and his eldest son John was born, just before he started for this country, 47 years ago. He came to Minneapolis in 1856 and to Douglas county 25 years ago. He was a veteran of the war having been a member of Co. H, First Minnesota heavy artillery"

The following Children are in US census records in Mass and Minn. as follows:

John, b. England ~1853

Julia  b. Mass (or England)  ~1854

Thomas  b. Mass ~ 1856

Aurora or Hannah  (Nora, My MIL G Grandmother married George Mattison) b. Minn ~1858

Mary b. Minn ~1860

Stephen b. Minn ~1862

Ellen  b. Minn ~1865

David  b. Minn ~1867

There is another family who was in the same vicinity in 1855 - 1875, John Costello and his wife Margaret, and their children Henry, James, Helen (or Ellinor) and Margaret.  First three children are born in Mass, last in Minn.  I suspect they may be related but have not been able to confim.

Any help in trying to locate where the family originated in Ireland would be greatly appreaciated

It is very difficult to identify a specific place of origin based on the information you have. Since the oldest son was John, I'm going to assume that Thomas' father was named John. In looking at the Griffiths Valuation data, I'm going to make a guess that Thomas Costello came from either Co. Galway or Co. Mayo. The Griffiths data at www.askaboutireland.ie shows 27 John Costellos in Galway and 23 John Costellos in Mayo. The Griffiths survey was conducted in those counties around 1856.

Sorry, I can't be more specific. Enjoy your trip to Ireland.

  • Roger,

Thanks for your reply.  I am still trying to see if any other US records may hold the key to where Thomas Costello originated in Ireland.

On one website, http://irishgenealogical.org there is an indication that Costello in Sauk Center MN (which is near to where they settled in MN) originated from Limerick (Abbeyfeale) I'm not sure quitethow that data is determined, and am trying to reach out there as well.

Are there any family census records which would have been taken in around the late 1840s which may have listed the two Costello's that seemed to travel together, Thomas and John, as brothers?  Thomas would have been born about 1825 and John's age per census records fluctuates anywhere from 1805 to 1823.

Love to hear any ideas or recommendation on how to trace this family.  Ireland research is uncharted territory for me!

    Regards,

A census was taken in 1841 and 1851 but unfortunately all the records (except a few fragments) were destroyed in 1922 during the Irish Civil War.

You may want to try www.rootsireland.ie to see if there is a baptismal record for a Thomas Costello with a father John in 1825. You have to pay to see the actual record. Good Luck!
