Thomas F. Hughes, a native of Ireland, was born Feb. 8, 1842 ( dates vary, Feb. 10, 1839) & is a son of William & Mary (McCoy) Hughes. His paternal grandfather was Thomas Hughes, & the father of Thomas was Arthur, a native of Scotland. The maternal grandfather of Thomas F. Hughes was William McCoy. William Hughes was born in 1818, was an extensive land holder & attorney in Ireland, and died in 1872,
Thomas F. Hughes matriculated at Trinity College, Dublin, at the age of seventeen. In 1860, he came to America, landed in New York, visited Eastern & Western States, & while in Chicago, invested $14,000 in the commission business, which business proved to very lucrative until the outbreak of the late war, (Civil War) which severed his trade connections with the South. The same year he returned to Ireland, remained there a few months, & again came to America.

In 1864, his parents came over & located in Illinois & at the close of the war Mr. Hughes went to Arkansas & engaged in the cotton trade, but was unsuccessful. In 1870, he went to St. Louis, & engaged himself as a teacher in a commercial school, & in 1872, married Miss Sarah E. Larkin, daughter of Judge George K. Larkin, of Illinois. Seven children blessed this union, namely, Mary Rose,
Robert, George, Kittie, James, Nettie & *Arthur. In 1885. Mr. Hughes brought his family to Texas & was appointed superintendent of schools at Gainesville, but, in Sept. 1886, established The Hughes Business School, to which now he gives his full attention.(Published Biographical Souvenir of The State Of Texas, 1889. * son Arthur was born after this publication.)
