I am trying to find out about my grandma's Irish ancestry.  Her father, Thomas O'Donoghue, was born in Galway at around 1866, and left Ireland for England as a young man.  I understand he married twice, my great grandma being his second wife and called Mary Jane Wood.  They had five daughters together and I understand he had a son from his first marriage.  I am afraid information about him is very scarce and to do with his character rather than factual (I do know that he loved birds) but any further leads would be most appreciated.

I am moving to Ireland this year with my family (my husband, our two young children and my disabled mum) and I hope to coninue my investigation then.  It would be so nice to discover some relatives.

Best wishes

Jane

Did your Thomas end up in or near Leeds ?

There's a possible marriage on the England/Wales BMD Index for a Thomas O'Donoghue and Mary J. Wood in Leeds Registration District in the 2nd Quarter on 1922, the volume is 9B, and Page 1097. It might be worth ordering a cert from GRO England/Wales to see the full details as the record should include father's names and occupations. (see attached extract from index showing the cross-match)

    Hello Margot and shanew147

So good of you both to reply to my post.

Firstly, Margot, the birth of his first child (my grandma) was 7/9/24, born in Leeds and named Mary Margaret O'Donoghue.

Shanew147 - Yes my Thomas did end up in Leeds.  Thank you so much for the information - I will try to order the certificate, perhaps it will give me something more to go forward with.

    Best wishes

  • Jane,
    Please go to www.familysearch.org
Put in O'Donoghue (with a X in the box)and Wood  (without a X in the box) as the mothers name and birthplace leeds.
There are 5 to a Wood and one to a Woods.
Please confirm if the Woods is correct.
    Thanks

    Margot
