Hello,

Very excited about this site!

While I know where my Grandmother May Egan emigrated from (Creggan, near Ferbane in Offaly), I do not know where my grandfather's parents came from yet.

We have family stories that my Great-grandfather Michael Tierney came from Roscommon and Great-grandmother Anna McDonald came from Westmeath, but I have not been able to find any documentation with that info yet. They both came over to NYC about 1880 (independently I believe) and were married about 1887.

Michael was listed as a stableman (ostler) on his US Naturalization, he became a NYC Municipal Policeman in 1885 and remained one until just before his death in 1913.

Michael & Anna had the following children in NY: Margaret, Annie, John (my grandfather), Michael Edward and Thomas.

I'd love to hear if anyone could help me locate their origin in Ireland, and finding cousins would be wonderful!

I've taken DNA tests at 23andm and Family Tree DNA. I match people in the McTiernan group on FTDNA, several of whom list their origin as Roscommon or Leitrim (Drumahaire and other places.)

The Tierneys in my rootsweb tree are here:

My genealogy blog is here:

Would love to hear from anyone -

Regards,

JT

  • Hello JT,

I've been in contact with Liam Byrne from Roscommon History and he says there are Winstons and Tierneys in Roscommon and his advice would be to write to

    The Editor,
    The Roscommon Herald,
    Boyle,
    Co. Roscommon.

The paper regularly carries letters like this and who knows!!

  • Delores,

Thank you for the information! I didn't receive a notification of a reply so didn't see this until I happened to login today and take another look around.

(Guess we need to subscribe even to posts we create ourselves? And wondering why my post shows up as by "Anonymous"? Hmm.)

In any case, I will certainly take a try with the Roscommon Herald.

    Regards,

    .JT.
