I have been trying to find out more about  my grandfathers family (for several years now) and I’m not really getting anywhere with records. My grandfather was Anthony O’Donnell, born 6th October 1922, most likely in Donegal, but I have heard stories about Galway also. He had two older brothers (twins) Peter and Daniel born 6th June/July 1914. Their parents were Daniel O’Donnell and ‘Nellie’ McNelis (not exact on the spelling) however, making a guess Nellie could be short for Helen or some other variant.

Anthony and his brother Daniel moved to Scotland, so their death records are not registered in Ireland. Both died in Rothesay, Isle of Bute in  1997 within weeks of each other.

  • Hi Miriam,

Thank you for responding. I can confirm his brothers names and their date of birth as 6th July 1914 as I am in communication with Daniel Jnr’s children/grandchildren, who unfortunately don’t know anymore than I do. This is also the date written on Daniels gravestone. I have managed to find my grandfathers marriage certificate which took place in Scotland. This lists his parents as Daniel O’Donnell and Ellen O’Donnell (m.s McNelis/McNellis). I also have rummaged around and found my grandfathers (Anthony O’Donnell) birth certificate which states his date of birth as 5th October 1922 (possibly 6th as it’s hard to make out). This birth was registered in the district of Doorachy, in the county of Galway. It also states the superintendent registrars district of Glentie.

I hope this information helps, I really appreciate you taking the time to look at this.

  • Hi Miriam,

I’m positive they were born in Ireland, it’s strange we can’t find them. And also strange why Galway is on my grandfathers birth certificate.

Wow that is amazing news!! I’m so impressed that you were able to find them! I will be passing this information onto my mother, who will love to see it after years of looking. Thank you so much. Hopefully this can lead onto more breakthroughs!

  • Hi Miriam,

I have just seen the post above my precious reply and hadn’t noticed it! I’m amazed about this news of them being in scotland and possibly having the twins here! I will email you and would love to see the obituaries. Thank you so much.
