hi there,
I am struggling to locate any records for my great great grandfather william woods. his son and father are both william also.
here is what I have found so far.
my great gf william woods, was borm in Liskey, Fintona, county Tyrone. on records it shows as Omagh. DOB 31/08/1882
his siblings were Margaret, jane, Robert, Eliza, Maryanne, Thomas, Alexander, Joseph, Martha, Tillie, and Andrew
He married Maryanne storey in county cork 15/01/1911 . he was a soldier, and later a shoemaker. on the wedding cert it states that his father my 2x great gf is william woods and that he was a station master. however, on the 1911 census it states that he was a farm servant. on the 1901 census it seems that william senior was born circa 1850,however on the 1911 census it seems he seems he was 15 years older than the previous census which he should have only been 10 yrs older. so DOB possibly around 1845.
William senior married Eliza clendinning, other spellings include clandinen, clandinnen, glendinning. marriage was in fintona ,Donacavey, Tyrone, on 23/11/1871. certificate states Elizas father is Robert and williams father is also william, and says he is a farmer.
I cannot find birth certificate for william senior 1850, I dont know who his siblings were, or his mother. There are many woods living in that parish and surrounding areas but I cant progress my search.
William was church of Ireland. I have a strong scottish connection so I am thinking william senior may have been born in scotland. In particular Lanarkshire, a lot of my searches bring me there. I have done DNA testing, my results are public on My heritage website and also Ancestry.com. My username on both is donnamariedineen. I also have uploaded results to gedcom.
I would really appreciate any help,at all,
thanks,
Donna

Are you sure that the Wm. who married Mary Storey is the correct one? It does seem odd that his father would be called a stationmaster in the 1911 marriage record when all other records have him working in farming. Just asking.

Donna,
The discrepancy in ages between the 1901 and 1911 census is probably due to the introduction of the Old Age pension. It started in 1909 and you had to be 70 or older to qualify. As a result thousands of people’s ages in the 1911 Irish census increased quite significantly as they hoped that this might help get their pension sooner. So it’s common to see wide discrepancies like this. (Folk normally didn’t celebrate birthdays in Ireland in the 1800s and often didn’t really know their age anyway. Guessing was common).
You won’t find a birth certificate for William senior because they only started in 1864 in Ireland. You might find his baptism record but that may not be on-line. PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast has a copy of the Donacavey/Fintona Church of Ireland baptism records. They start in 1800. Personal visit required to view them.
You wonder if William senior was born in Scotland. In both the 1901 & 1911 censuses he gave his place of birth as Co Tyrone so I would think he was born there. Just that the records you need are not on-line.
In the various birth certificates for his children, and in the censuses, and on his own marriage certificate, he described himself as a servant or labourer. No mention of any railway employment (and to be a station master you would need to have worked for the railways for a reasonable length of time). Like Patricia, I wonder if the man who married in Cork in 1911 is the same man who was born in Tyrone in 1882. Where was William junior in the 1901 and 1911 censuses? How do you know the man who married in 1911 came from Tyrone?
