Trip to the home of my ancestors in 2020

My 3 cousins and I are visiting Country Tipperary in September 2020. We are hoping to find the homes of our Ancestors. Our great grandparents emigrated to Australia in the 1800s from Ballyneale, Carrickbeg, Carrick on Suir and Clonmel. The family names we know are Joy, Cleary, Norris, Galvan/Galvin.

  • Hi Kerrie,

    Welcome Kerrie,

We probably need some first names and approximate birth years as there are lots of these surnames on record in the parishes you listed. (subscription site) has Ballyneale R C baptism records for Cleary, Norris & Galvin (none for Joy) in the 1800's but none has an address - only the parish is given!!

There are lots of baptisms for each name in Carrick-on-Suir both R C (from 1794) & Civil from 1864

If you want to search yourself, the R C records are available free at; Ballyneale baptisms start at 1839; Carrickbeg 1842; Carrick-on-suir 1784 & Clonmel 1790

The Tithe Applotments (free at have records from the early 1820's & have 4 Joys, 309 Clearys, 22 Norrises, 5 Galvins & 1 Galvan; you can search by parish

If they didn't leave till later 1800's Griffiths Valuation (1848 to 64) is also free & can be searched by parish

Disappointingly, the 1851 Irish Census has none of any of the surnames in Tipperary!
